Today we remember the original Rednecks: 10,000 coal miners who fought a literal army in order to earn better working conditions during the Battle of Blair Mountain 100 years ago.
Here's a little bit of info about the largest armed labor uprising in U.S. history:

#LaborDay
These West Virginian miners were diverse members of the working class: white and Black, immigrants and deep-rooted locals. They lived in an oppressive company town where the mining company controlled every aspect of their life, even charging them for their own work tools.
2/12
When United Mine Workers began organizing in the area, companies hired private detectives to spread propaganda and intimidate union sympathizers.
Things came to a head when the local sheriff, a supporter of the union miners, was murdered by these agents in broad daylight.

To help us launch our new website, we partnered with some comrades of ours. @malcolmkenyatta penned an editorial on why he thinks the #PROAct is right for Pennsylvania. It's a must-read. Check out this exclusive here: paspotlight.org/2021/malcolm-k…
"We desperately need stronger protections for workers across industries, so we reverse this trend and get on the path towards a strong and thriving middle class in PA — and in the US at large." - @malcolmkenyatta
"Unions give a voice to workers in a way they do not have on their own: a stronger voice to fight for better wages, the ability to improve the quality of jobs and increase job security while guarding against discrimination of all forms." - @malcolmkenyatta

Really bummed about the loss in Bessemer, but am equally bummed about the birdbrained takes on here trashing the workers down there. There are so many factors at play in the decision to vote yes, not least of which is that Amazon operates virtually lawlessly.
Amazon opens facilities in places a decade+ removed from the corporate offshoring that left their communities dotted with idle factories. As the only employer in these regions, they exert outsized influence on the livelihoods not just of their employees, but their communities.
People are inclined to protect what they have, however little it may be, rather than risk it for a future believed to be uncertain—a belief made stronger by Amazon's constant harassment, surveillance, and psychological warfare against its employees, extending to work restrooms.

The #PROAct will remove many obstacles to joining a union and achieving a union contract through collective bargaining. Unions give workers and families a real path out of poverty, and in the post-COVID-19 pandemic recovery, we need them more than ever. #PassTheProAct
One of the #PROAct's most significant provisions is meaningful, enforceable penalties for breaking federal labor law.
Mere slaps on the wrist and what often amounts to naming and shaming are not sufficient to change the anti-union behavior of those who are insulated from the consequences of lawbreaking by the enormous amount of legal and other resources at their disposal.

First, we took back our power—and our country—by winning in November.

Then, we went to Georgia—and took back the Senate.

Now, we are seeing the fruits of our labor (!) with the introduction of the #PROAct by a Congress that's more aligned with OUR interests.

#PassThePROAct
Union contracts are vehicles for opportunity—tools we've used to create job training programs, wage equity across gender & race, & access to jobs for Black workers in particular.

The #PROAct will remove barriers to organizing & bargaining—esp important for marginalized workers.
We've been on strike.

Several times, actually.

And every single time, the boss will use scare tactics to try to "lure" workers into scabbing—including by hiring scabs to replace them.

The #PROAct will allow workers to do the right thing without fear of losing their job.
