Watch @_VivekTrivedi stand up to @SteveBarclay about #payrestoration for junior doctors on Sunday with @bbclaurak
"A five percent pay uplift this year would still amount to a massive real-terms pay cut...an offer which does not reverse that trajectory would not be fair or reasonable."
"No doctor goes on strike happily, no doctor wants to inherently go on strike."

1/18 THOUGHT for the #Coronation W/E:

Our NHS is a "jewel in the crown" of UK. But pay in the NHS has been #RoyallyScrewed 👇

If you want to understand why nurses, junior doctors (& potentially consultants) are striking, start with this graph
Short🧵 pls read to end & share/RT Image
2/18 Firstly H/T @jburnmurdoch - the graph above was very much inspired by his excellent analysis & charts on NHS pay. This thread of his (which excluded consultants pay) is very much worth a read

@jburnmurdoch 3/18 But coming back to my chart you will see that measured against "consumer price index", pay versus that measure has completely failed to keep up inflation - with

Consultants ⬇️⬇️DOWN £38,764/yr
"Junior" docs (all gds) ⬇️⬇️DOWN £17,394/yr
Nurses DOWN ⬇️£5,146/yr Image

1/29 We need to talk about these graphs 👇

We have nurses & junior doctors on strike & consultants potentially joining them very soon. Lets talk about inflation & pay. How to fix this car crash (& perhaps more importantly, how NOT to). Please read full 🧵 to end and share / RT ImageImage
2/29 Lets start with the excellent pay graphs from the excellent @jburnmurdoch from the @FT published this week.

What do they show? They show we are NOT "all in this together" ImageImage
@jburnmurdoch @FT 3/29 Let me explain. The top blue line - representing "all workers" from "all sectors" are broadly close in pay terms where their pay was in March 2009 - before austerity began to bite (around only 3.1% below in real terms) ImageImage

My grief for the NHS has reached the sadness stage - I came home yesterday and cried, not just with tiredness, but with the growing realisation that it is irrevocably broken. For all those that say ‘you know what you signed up for’ - it was never this
For those that say ‘you can always leave’, like many other experienced doctors, I’m exit planning. Our juniors are angry but many are still at the bargaining stage. Let’s try to hang onto them while we still can. #payrestoration #JuniorDoctor
For anyone not convinced by the amount of service ‘junior’ doctors provide, in order to provide the basic level of emergency care without them ALL elective activity, outpatients and operating, has stopped. We need them back, and we need to make it better so they want to stay

This morning’s @NickTriggle piece for the BBC contains a number of misleading claims about the BMA’s upcoming industrial action.

First and foremost, we are not “demanding the biggest pay rise”—we’re demanding that our members’ pay be restored to what it should be.
“Firstly, no junior doctor has seen pay cut by 26%”

This deliberately conflates pay progression - increases to reflect increased skill and experience level—and cost of living increases—which is what pay awards are meant for.
Since 2008, junior doctor pay in England has been cut in real-terms (RPI) by 26.1%. No doctor is worth less than they were 15 years ago.

From today, some employers, seniors and rota coordinators will tell you things that are not true.

Some are clumsy mistakes, some are attempts to undermine your will to strike.

The media will attack you and your reps.

Here are some mistruths you may hear:
🧵
"You are x type of Dr, you can't strike"

All types of care are included in the strike. GP trainees, Emergency and Critical Care - you can strike.

Some doctors e.g. Armed Forces, Public Health are ineligible. If unsure if you can strike, check BMA FAQ

bma.org.uk/our-campaigns/…
"You need to tell us whether or not you're coming in"

You do not have to tell anyone whether or not you will be taking strike action. Employers should plan for all junior doctors to be on strike.

Contact your local BMA representative for support if they get insistent. BMA FAQ screenshot advising junior doctors not to tell their

🧵What pushed me over the edge in the NHS today:

A v unwell pt needed an urgent echo today. I chased the report at 4pm and realised it hadn’t been done. A colleague asked the cardiology consultant if he wouldn’t mind doing it and he said he would if I got the machine from CCU
CCU said I could only have the machine if I would make sure it was back in the office before I left. The pt NEEDED the echo so of course I agreed. The lovely consultant did the echo at 5:20 (20 mins after my shift ended) then said he had another echo on another ward and would-
only be 15 mins. The echo was more tricky and the consultant didn’t bring the echo machine back till 6:30pm. I was already super tired and hungry after a ridiculously busy day so I hurried it back to CCU. When I got there the offices were shut and locked.-

What don't you get?

Doctors are desperate to get off the treadmill of training especially when it's less training and more service provision.

Locum work provides simultaneously more stability and flexibility financially and geographically. That's just mad.
Contract work is so poorly paid and valued it is miserable.

Doctors see training like a breath holding exercise. Force yourself through the doors at work, cross your fingers and hope there's no disaster today, then exhale when you get home.

Have you never heard of CCT and flee?
Do you not feel the moral injury that we do as we know patients are unable to get the best care in the best time?

Do you not feel ashamed of the situation we are in?

Do you not feel scared of how your family would be treated?
