🧵The #fiscalconservativemyths around good government being dependent on #balancedbudgets and ridiculous comparisons of government budgets to household budgets is about to arise yet again. Let's check these myths out.
Do economists believe that the budget should be balanced each fiscal year? No, a budget should be balanced only on average; it can be in a deficit during a recession and offset by surpluses when the economy is doing well.
A balanced budget refers to total budget expenditure being equal to the total budget receipts. Adam Smith and other classical economists advocated the concept of balanced budget. They claimed a balanced budget is the best since it has a neutral effect on the economy.

1. We all saw the #destruction caused by visible #looting in #SAUnrest & communities are reeling from the impact. But about 1000 times of what it will cost to repair last week’s damage, was “invisibly” looted through #StateCapture & #corruption. Here are some highlights
2. According to @ShadowWorldInv1 the #ArmsDeal of the 1990’s cost SA an estimated R2,2 billion looted to pay bribes and kickbacks. To date nothing has been recovered. Money that could have changed the poor’s lives wasted on #GrandScaleLooting.
3. In 2015 @CompComSA found #construction companies #GroupFive, #WBHO, #BasilRead, Murray&Roberts, #Aveng & #StefanuttiStocks guilty of #colluding when building 2010 FIFA World Cup stadiums. This added R14 billion to construction costs. (Your taxmoney!)

Agree with #MarkCarney that #PensionFunds must change invest strategy to combat #climatechange⏩#netzero...but UK is +can
-change investment practices
-drive diff behaviour by companies
- finance a green industrial revolution
-continue to sustain DB /DC pensions
Thread on how:1/
Firstly, there are law changes and disclosure practices to drive behavioural change to climate friendly investment. This is already happening:
- With UK Govt 1/10/19 #Environmental Regs (#ESG Regs)
- plus action in parliament: ftadviser.com/pensions/2019/… 2/
The Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosures (#TCFD) needs to do more:
- we need fuller #disclosure of #climaterisk/management of climate risk policies worldwide + in UK: this is a work in progress, but a lot has been done:see June 19 report 3/: fsb.org/2019/06/tcfd-r…

Paid XR activists who call for collective guilt & punitive #taxes on the western #taxpayer are enabling new breed of green capitalism, that make select few fabulously rich, while the rest of us choke down meatless hamburgers & pay our #politicians to tax us into oblivion

Climate Mobilization’s call to action has also managed to unite leftists & anti-capitalists with the global elite. Extinction Rebellion’s call for “net zero” atmospheric carbon is shared by The World Bank, and a host of neoliberal think-tanks & financiers

What explains Canadian Pension Funds' risky bets in India?

Pension Funds are custodians of retrial money of public and hence are expected to be conservative. Canadian Pension Funds, however, are different. Thread 1/11
These Pension Funds are not shy of picking up assets in the troubled sectors. Real Estate and Infrastructure assets are key bets of these funds in India. They have invested in roads, airports, solar energy, commercial real-estate and other perceptibly riskier assets. 2/11
