This by @byrne_a gives a sense of surreal environment for academic philosophers arguing that woman=adult human female, subject to slurs and (worse) preposterous counterarguments from ideologues, while institutions like OUP roll over #philosophytwitter

Just to add: the treatment of @aytchellesse by @OUPPhilosophy is truly abysmal, so plainly motivated by abject cowardice and/or rancour from internal enemies, abandoning all normal standards for dealing with a highly competent author. I'd never publish with them again myself.
There's a bunch of philosophers who hover proprietorially over anything written about sex/gender, nixing everything that doesn't conform to preferred conclusions. They pretend to be doing social justice with words, but by now it's as much about saving reputations as anything else

🧵 COVID-19 and being overwhelmed by moral outrage and moral injury*:
(Because a lot of us are)

This is about the recurrent feelings of horror, disbelief, sadness, helplessness & anger in response to the callousness & cruelty we continue to see during the pandemic.
(1/18)
The majority of us (I'd like to think) share important ethical values & standards that we believe should guide how we & our leaders handle a disaster like the pandemic. These include:
-We should prioritise life & health for everyone.
-We should protect our kids
(2/18)
-We should protect our most vulnerable (CEV, the disabled, the elderly, the poor, etc)
-We should try to look after and help all our fellow humans, everywhere.

These are all 'as much as possible' values & standards i.e. you aim to do the most you can.

A little story: “Everything you need to learn to be a rocket scientist is available online, right now, for free."

Several years ago, @BenBlair (my husband) and @JoshStanley (my brother) learned that premise and it stuck with them.
If that premise was true (and they could see it clearly was true), then tuition rates should be falling — and falling fast. But they’re not. U.S. College Tuition is outrageous, and it gets worse every year!

In response, they set out to build the Most Affordable, Accredited, U.S.-based, Degree-Granting University possible — and make it available to students all over the world. And they’ve succeeded.

Permit me to brag a bit about what they’ve built and why it's so cool.

Hey #philosophytwitter! I've these questions about Confucius and the Confucian school of thought:

Does the term “Confucian” refer exclusively to the teachings of Confucius or to something more general? If it's the latter, were these two always compatible?

(1/n)
As in, are there contradictions to be found between these general ideas and the teachings of Confucius?

Also, as an extension of this question, what were the beliefs of the Confucian school on nationalism, war and the rights of the Chinese emperor over the world?

(2/n)
Any references would be of great help, too. Thank you :)

PS, I have a rather vague understanding of Chinese history and philosophy. So, please pardon anything that sounds silly or — I hope not — obnoxious.
