Here are the 8 Sequences for Man Of Steel.
Sequence 1: The Destruction of Krypton. We get a high-genre scifi epic reintroducing us to Kal-El as an alien from another world. Fantastic performance from Russell Crowe setting the tone for the entire story.
No joke, I teach this movie in my screenwriting class. Structurally it’s perfect. Every joke has a second shoe. All 8 sequences have clear breaks. How do you not cry at the end?

Out of 55 finalists across 6 contests, 22 landed a rep or paid work after the contest (that's 40%). 7 of those writers (13% of all finalists) now have the makings of a screenwriting career. Before I get into how each contest did, a lil word on methodology
This is some back of napkin math, and if anyone wants to gather more data, I encourage you to research more years or competitions (or try a feature focus). For each competition, I googled 10 finalists to see where they're at now. TV first, but features as well in certain cases.

We’ll be focusing on spec scripts but there are: spec, shooting, and directors scripts. A spec script is something you write in hopes of selling it. A shooting script is used on set. The directors script is a detailed script used to help make the directors vision clearer. 2/?

Hey #PipelineWriters, I've been racking up my fair share of general meetings lately, and thought I'd share a pattern I noticed in what meetings have gone the best, to maybe help ease some nerves for those of you just getting to this stage...

First, what does it mean for a general meeting to have "gone well?"
It means you've opened a new door. That's it. Literally. It means you've made a meaningful connection that begins a new relationship in a business that is forged entirely on the strength of relationships.

A general meeting is not a pitch meeting and it is not a job interview. So relax. While most will end with the exec saying "I'd love to find something to work with you on," you want the meeting to end with them saying it enthusiastically, and of course, actually meaning it.

2) a little background, I’m a former Wall Street lawyer, follow the markets carefully so I was ahead of this story, the only reason I even considered chasing it was my headstart. I had loosely been considering rise of Robinhood traders for years now with no angle figured out
3) So two weeks ago before it hit the news it became a minor financial blip. I immediately saw where it was going, not some savant, but b/c A) I did a deep Reddit dive and b) I was there in 2008 on ground zero when subprime blew up. I felt it in my bones this was going to explode
1) Here goes my thread about how I landed my first OWA. Open Writing Assignment. Btw, I had no idea what term meant a year ago so don't feel bad if you don't. The easy way to explain: A studio/producer has a property/IP/an idea but no writer. #screenwriting #pipelinewriters
2) So they solicit writers to come in and give their take. It's basically a bake off. I had low hopes because I'm a new writer and they almost always go with more established writers, but hey, sometimes the best idea wins! I landed it, yay.I'll get to that, but first my long road
3) Grew up on Long Island, middle class, zero connections to Hollywood. I mean ZERO. Chose law school. I wanted to be in entertainment but didn't know that was a viable career path. Did well, worked at biggest law firm in the world. But deep down I knew this wasnt the life for me
Whole thread is good, but #pipelinewriters I think this part is really interesting since it illustrates how I think we commonly learn about writing dialogue.
Which is perhaps worth analyzing because the dominant culture of film and tv is, I would argue, guess culture. Whether it be in business and how assistants move up, or how we write scenes.
Since, it is worth thinking about whether we're "layering in" drama as opposed to just occluding it through this guess culture behavior. Especially when there is good dramatic power in being direct at times.
