Quick thought about OO and message passing. I should probably turn this into a blog post. What if the reason why the original UNIX and #plan9 teams at bell labs never really went OO with their base system was because they already had the best parts of it in a different form?
The UNIX philosophy is to build small tools that do one thing well. The tools themselves weren’t historically written in an OO language. But, a recent quite emerged from Alan Kay indicating that he felt that the best idea in OO was in fact the message passing, not the inheritance
polymorphism, etc. So, while the UNIX tools themselves didn’t use many of those concepts in their code they could pass messages to each other in the form of pipes, files, fifos, etc.
