Running Moon depicts the nuanced interaction between clouds and moonlight. It is a search for boundaries between structure and fluidity, precision and errors. It's a quest for harmony. The rendering of Running Moon is inspired by stained glass and watercolor.

Welcoming another Penman #penplotter turtle home. Hope to learn how to repair these and get them working again. Many thanks to @Retro_CAD for this one! #plottertwitter #RetroComputing
Here’s a video of a Penman plotter in working order.
The new Penman fails to detect the page edges during a home cycle. Without this, it can’t begin a plot correctly. Edges are detected through two small slots on either side of the turtle with an IR emitter and receiver pair. Black paper is recommended to increase edge contrast.

Did you know there were typewriters that used ball point pens to draw not just text but also graphics? I’ve collected several of these over the years. Thread: 🧵 #plottertwitter #RetroComputing

Panasonic made three models. The top shelf was the RK-P400C Penwriter which included the RS-232 port built in for computer control. They also came with a white pen for error correcting.
With computer control, the typewriter come act like a pen plotter. I scanned the RK-P400C manual: archive.org/details/panaso…

(2/4) Human experience is in fact precisely what a plotter lacks--it can't see what it draws, it doesn't feel the pressure of the pen on the paper, in fact it doesn't even know it's current position. It just knows that the computer tells it how to move its motors.
(3/4) That is why it was up to me to program some of these features in the algorithm that ultimately controls the motor movements. I use signed distance fields and ray marching to give it a feeling of shape, light and shadow.

Today’s #genuary2021 prompt is Rule 30. Glad to have the time today to participate so here’s a couple of new #plottertwitter variations I created. Random initial states.
I used the HP 7550+ for the one Rule 30 plot. I’m still astonished that it’s this fast. #plottertwitter
I’ve done some other variations of this rule set in the past. A couple of years ago, I combined several rules together into one CMY plot. #plottertwitter

The newest plotter in my collection is also a.. calculator? The Sharpgraph EL-7050 plotting calculator could produce circle, line, band, and bar charts on 2.25” paper using the micro Alps mechanism. Anyone have a service manual? #plottertwitter
Lurking inside is a NiCD 4xAA battery pack that’s typical from 1983. It’s leaking so out it goes. You can also see the Alps DPG-1301 micro plotter mechanism and the power section.
The main board is attached to the top half. Logic on the bottom, membrane keypad and LCD display on top. A few bodges and trace cuts that seem to be interrupting ground. I wonder why?

Going to do the #30DayMapChallenge with only baseball data... Should be fun.
Here's day 1 (Points).

#Phillies Citizens Bank Park LIDAR point data. 3.5 million data points. ImageImageImage
Day 2 of the #30DayMapChallenge (Lines)... An animation breaking down where players that played in 2020 were born color coded by team and going to their home stadium.
Day 3 of #30DayMapChallenge (Polygons)... Here's a Voronoi diagram using #MLB stadium distances to create team boundaries. Pretty cool results. Image

i'm tired of PCB layout right now, so let's read some old Computer Design magazines from 1975.
if you want to read them on your own, check out bitsavers.org/pdf/computerDe…
it starts off with modems! wow, looks like someone's project box.

Wonderful @numberphile video featuring chaos, Julia, Mandelbrot and @SparksMaths .
I rewrote my Mandelbrot drawer after being inspired by this video by @SparksMath (maybe my 4th rewrite!) Interactive: openprocessing.org/sketch/701474 Left mouse click to zoom in, right click to zoom out. 'o' to turn the orbit on/off. 'j' to turn the related julia set on/off.
Up/down arrow increases/decreases how many calculations to do at each pixel. The internal coloring (normally black) is based on how far away from the origin the orbit ended up (uses half the colors, the outside uses the other half).

I've been messing around with #processing and generative art -- mostly inspired by #plottertwitter, but for now strictly digital. It's pretty fun!

I'm in the desert, alone with 2 robots (again).
The first robot is a drawing machine.
It helps me draw things I can't draw.
The second robot is a tiny drone.
It helps me "see" things from places I can't go.
