#AyushmanBharat #PMJAY provides free inpatient treatment to a large section of population in private & public hospitals. At the same time, it also has a potential to permanently change the infrastructure landscape of #healthcare industry in the country. 2/n
Many Indians seek healthcare in a private set up. However, for treatment requiring hospital admission, most of the poor go to public facilities as they can't afford pvt healthcare. Public infra is already inadequate. This has created immense pressure on public hospitals. 3/n
This is exactly why #PMJAY is more than just another "scheme". Its quality, pricing, protocol, monitoring, and purchasing standards can have a multiplier effect on the entire health system, impacting the health of all Indians, well beyond the money that they directly spend.
The impact of these efforts will be further magnified if the insurance regulator (#IRDAI) and the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (#ESIC) include these standards in their own guidelines and regulations.
#IRDAI and #PMJAY (@AyushmanNHA) constituted a joint working group in March 2019 to discuss many of these issues. They have now published their reports which are worth a careful read and contain a number of far-reaching ideas: irdai.gov.in/ADMINCMS/cms/f…

PMJAY covers 10.7 cr families, compared to 11.2 cr covered by previous schemes.
Take Maharashtra, where 2.3 cr families were in a state plan in 2017-18. PMJAY only covers 84 lakh. Modi gets to hog credit rebranding it #AyushmanBharat, paying only 22% of the premium. Sweet. 2/n

As for the ₹5 lakh cover, the ₹1,100 premium (centre pays 60%) is way too little, and the actual cost could bankrupt state govts.
