Day 5 – Return of the #Barasingha to #Satpura #Tiger Reserve !!!

Swamp Deer commonly known as Barasingha have three subspecies, Wetland Barasingha, Hardground Barasingha and Eastern Barasingha.

Once #swamp #deer inhabited areas from Central India to the Godavari river in the south. Currently, they are found in five discrete populations in 3 regions of central, north-east and northern India.
2/12
Before the 1950s, the number of Hard ground Barasingha was estimated to be around 3,000 in Banjar Valley of Kanha National Park (KNP). However, by the 1960s the number had dwindled to a meagre 66 due to expansion of #agricultural activities into barasingha habitats...

Just watched this, it's only 40 minutes long and can be watched on Netflix. It's a beautifully directed film set in Namibia. Highly recomend watching!
The film covers some interesting points such as; the distinction between owning the land or being apart of the lands natural rhythm.
Before Europeans dominated Africa tribes hunted in small amounts for food on the land they shared with 'Giants'. A sustainable lifestyle.
Once Europeans arrived they shared there mentality with the people of Africa. More for more money an different and unsustainable lifestyle.

Now we see crime syndicates poaching the animals we doomed with our presence and mindset.

#Hosana you deserved to live your life wild & free. You fought hard to survive at a young age & became a successful beloved young leopard. I am sorry you were murdered by humans meant to protect you. This must never happen again. In a drainage ditch at dawn? Just NO. #wildearth
If anti #poachers can kill a wild habituated leopard in his own domain in a drainage ditch at dawn then I no longer believe in #conservation or the mission of #wildearth. RIP #Hosana you were loved more than #cecilthelion May the #sabisands learn from your death & never repeat it
Sabi Sands Wildtuin says the killing of #hosana was investigated & conclude all safety protocols were followed. When was he killed? What exactly happened? A beloved HABITUATED (for 💰) leopard was executed by the #sabisands proving humans & wild animals cannot coexist. #wildearth

Thread on why we have lodged an objection with Namibia's Environmental Commissioner regarding #ReconAfrica's planned 2D seismic surveys criss-crossing #elephant migration corridors across the Kavango regions of Namibia.

dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-0…
Our objection is coupled with a plea to employ the #precautionary principle to protect the largest cross-border #elephant herd from the harmful actions linked not only to seismic surveying but also from the ongoing exploratory #oil and #gas #drilling in #Namibia.
Seismic surveys help locate oil and gas reservoirs. It takes place by laying receptors called geophones along either a line (2D) or in a grid (3D) and detonating an explosive device, then recording the various soundwaves that are picked up by the geophones. Image: RBS

🦈WHALE SHARK🦈
#Whalesharks are the largest fish in the sea, reaching almost 19m! They are one of only three filter-feeding shark species, the others being the megamouth shark and basking shark. They use gill filters to catch plankton, jellies and small fish. #Sharktober
We usually think of filter-feeding as happening automatically as the animal swims with its mouth open, but whale sharks are actually very active hunters. They use active suction to catch small animals near the water's surface. #Sharktober #whaleshark
#Whalesharks typically prefer tropical and temperate open oceans, but their slow migrations often bring them near shore to feed. These aggregation sites, including #SouthAfrica's southern coast, often benefit greatly from #ecotourism as a result of these beautiful visitors.
