L.A. County has 88 cities, each w/ a mayor and city council.
Los Angeles is the most populous county in the United States, with more than 10 million inhabitants as of 2018. It is the largest non–state-level govt entity in the United States.

Its population is greater than that of 41 individual U.S. states. It includes the Port of L.A. and LAX.
It has over 10,000 police.
@MayorOfLA Instead of increasing the LAPD budget 40% for more overtime, why not hire more mental health workers, retrain officers and open..
2/
...community based units instead of rewarding exhausted, tired, overworked and short tempered Police with overtime?

Just a thought.

ATTRACTIVE NIGERIAN POLICE WE DESERVE

#EndSARS must not be wasted. @PoliceNG officers also should take advantage of it. You all deserve to be respected beyond the bad eggs that have brought shame to this noble cause in reality.
You are our brothers, you are our sisters!
Nigeria Police can be attractive, @PoliceNG can be friendly. Making Police attractive to the society is a work that should be carried out. Unfortunately, the only people that can change the unwholesome narratives the society has towards them are the people wearing that uniform.
Seeing a few @PoliceNG taking it upon themselves to change the narrative by portraying the positive images of their assignment, I believe it will go a long way if we can also appreciate them UNTIL others begin to see why they should portray the positive image of the institution.

#EndSARS: HOW CELEBRITIES CORRUPTED THE POLICE

I know we have lost some grounds due to avoidable crisis as a result of LEADERLESS movement & incorrigible generation who insisted they would not say "to", then began to say "to-to-to".
#ReformPoliceNG is a must as a Nation! 🧵🧵
Nigeria didn't suddenly become what is it in all sectors, it's an amalgamation of our contributions to the kind of society we have stabbed from different angle.
The event of the past few weeks have clearly shown that "like people, like leaders". How did Police become INEFFECTIVE?
Is there any way Celebrities have contributed to our woes as a Nation? By all standard, if we call the general assembly of resealable beings, you will see how celebrities have been part of our woes. When they set "N10 million table" in a show for politicians, what do u expect?😇

“CAHOOTS workers responded to 24,000 calls in 2019, ~20% of dispatches & ~150 required police backup. The program saves the city ~$8.5M in public safety costs yearly, plus another $14M in ambulance & ER costs.”

STRATEGY WINS WAR, NOT EMOTIONS

So don’t go to war without wise guidance;
victory depends on having many advisers. Prov 24:6 (NLT)

When #EndSARSProtest started, some of us insisted that our focus should be on #PoliceReformNG.
#EndSARS ended but reality of brutality is here
The problem you are finding difficult to accept is this, #SARSMUSTEND is a wrong strategy AFTER IGP disbanded SARS.
I have opined that the major issue we should focus with is this monsters equipped with our TAXES given guns to kill if Okada man refuse them N50. #ReformPoliceNG
The problem with our @PoliceNG is beyond #EndSARS which was cut off two days ago.
Here is where wisdom should prevail instead of asking people to go ahead with #SARSMUSTEND & add more blood to our sorrow in the hands of bloodthirsty Policemen wielding their guns. STRATEGY wins!

END SARS PROTEST: DON'T WASTE THIS VICTORY.

The protest was defined..#EndSarsProtests
President Buhari messed himself up, wasted another opportunity to turn a bad situation around & make use of it. Disappointed many of us by keeping MUTE till now in his ASO ROCK. #SARSMUSTEND
All his media aides messed up the golden opportunity to prove their offices (except Tolu Ogunlesi). They all occupied image making positions, the only problem is that their own image making is what matter & nothing more.
Did you see the speed at which Femi Adesina defend himself?
Now this is where we are. While we were still in the midst of #EndSARS the IGP came LIVE to announce that SARS formation has been dissolved.
At that point, it simply means the existence of a unit known as SARS is no more known to law in form or practice.
#SARSMUSTEND is for what?

Trump has already spent several minutes interrupting and arguing with the moderator, and he's thrown out a racial slur.

Wallace: "Mr. President, can you please let him finish?"

Joe "He doesn't know how to do that." 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Joe: "Will you shut up? Keep yapping, man."

YES 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Biden rolling his eyes, laughing at Trump, and muttering "God" is all of us.

YES Joe, bring up the "It will disappear, it will be like a miracle".

No, we can't trust Trump. He's tried to muzzle the CDC. He lies every time he opens his mouth.

#PoliceReform: Police are the public’s first interface with the criminal justice system & crime registration is a crucial first step in the process. Not registering a crime fails to deter criminals, thus stymieing the process of justice. (1/n)
The results from our survey on 'Safety Trends And Reporting of Crime' revealed underreporting."This could be because victims themselves refrained from approaching the police [..] or the police did not register the case for various reasons", explain @AvantiDurani & @_NehaSinha.
What are some reasons for not filing an FIR? 30% of respondents felt that the police would not entertain their complaint, in Chennai, 51% mentioned lack of evidence, and in Bengaluru, 35% didn’t want to get tangled in police/court procedures.(3/n)

Our 2017 SATARC survey revealed that 75% to 91% of the people across the four surveyed metropolises—Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Delhi believed that the police can be relied upon when needed. (2/n)
Close to half the respondents in Bengaluru, 60% in Delhi, a little over three-quarters in Chennai and 70% in Mumbai believed that the police would treat them with respect. (3/n)

Hi there, coming at you from Laurelhurst park where maybe 150 protesters are getting ready to march

Oh boy. Let's see what happens

#PortlandProtests #PortlandRiots #pdxprotest #BlackLivesMatter #PoliceReform #Police #DefendPDX
Like the Kaiser Chiefs in the early 2000s, I predict a riot

I predict this no matter what the protest does. National attention is on us. The police have a chance to really drive home that "violent anarchist" narrative tonight, and I expect them to lean into it hard

I was trained to shoot a Suicide bomber in the head. In 2002 or early 2003, I was a Secret Service agent working in D.C. protecting a “high value” protectee from the Middle East. That was the day the “bomber” approached.” I didn’t shoot. (Thread)
Keep in mind this is happening months after the 9/11 attacks. We are at war and everyone is waiting for that next domestic hit. My protectee was visiting his U.S. ambassador on Mass Ave. (Embassy Row) & the motorcade was in front of the residence.
I was working Protective Intelligence, so I didn’t need to go inside the residence, but rather I remained standing with the motorcade while the protectee was inside. It wasn’t long until I saw the problem coming down the sidewalk.

Mega Thread in English on police violence in the USA.
1/3 of all the people killed by a stranger in the USA are actually killed by a police officer

In March and April of 2020 (during quarantine) the police killed as many people as they did in March and April of 2019 even though people were in their homes and there was a historic
decrease in crime. Despite that the police killed the same number of people at the same rate.

2019 was the first year ever where black people were more afraid of being killed by police than community violence

In Minneapolis (where George Floyd was murdered) black people have 13

That Portland #Police Association (#PPA) President Darryl Turner is also the President of #ORCOPS, the Oregon Coalition of Police & Sheriffs, which he helped launch in 2015?

ORCOPS website says "ORCOPS uses the Portland Police Association office as a home base with an on-staff social media manager, in-house communications, and shared resources so our overhead is minimal."
Tom Perkins is the Secretary-Treasurer, who is also from the #PPA.

#pdx #gov ImageImage
#ORCORPS touts itself as saying that their "members are the only law enforcement advocacy group in Oregon with a proven history of influence and representation in the State legislature."

This means they like to be involved in law & policy making.

As #RVA works through 2 separate task forces, let’s talk about #PoliceReform, specifically Civilian Review Boards (CRBs)
#RVAProtests #RVACouncil #Thread
1/
Original CRB: the 1948 Complaint Review Board in DC. Idea (going back to Progressive Era) is to provide oversight of police by folks from outside the corps of sworn officers. Data hard to find (and police don't like to give it)
2/
BUT necessary - police internal review doesn't work (#PCPTP , or police cannot police the police); and elected oversight fails because of fear (don't want to be called weak on law-and-order politics). Police are NOT your typical bureaucracy

My post last month on how police union power frustrates accountability: cato.org/blog/police-ac…
No wonder the cops in Chicago are out of control: "buried deep" in Illinois law is a section providing that when a police union contract "conflicts with any other law or regulation, the contract prevails." Outrageous! [@CityJournal] #PoliceReform city-journal.org/illinois-polic… /3

"For Police Accountability, Tackle The Laws That Empower Police Unionts" -- my new @CatoInstitute post cato.org/blog/police-ac… #PoliceReform
Disturbingly, influential lawmakers of both parties, including Joe Biden and Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), have sought to take the Law Enforcement Officers Bill of Rights idea national through federal legislation. That's a terrible idea. /2
"As the authors of a Florida study put it, police unionization may 'strengthen a code of silence that impedes the detection of misconduct.'" And then bad state laws make things worse. /3 #PoliceReform

The @CityofCleveland Mental Health Response Advisory Committee met hours before @cory_shaffer's story was published about how @CLEpolice officers were disciplined in the Tanisha Anderson case. Nobody from the @cle_monitorteam or @USAttyHerdman's office told us about this.
The City of Cleveland Mental Health Response Advisory Committee (MHRAC) was created in 2015 as a mandate of the consent decree between @TheJusticeDept & @CityofCleveland. Nothing #MHRAC does remotely resembles oversight. We have not had a single discussion about Tanisha Anderson.
I have brought up Tanisha Anderson's death numerous times in an effort to prevent future tragedies. But the subject is off-limits. You have to ask why the #Cleveland #police department doesn't want to prevent a potential future in-custody death. #SayHerName #TanishaAnderson
