She went on to do a Christine Mirzayan S&T fellowship via @aaas, one of the few options available to #international applicants (cc @IWS_Network). Wanting to engage #ECR, she applied for a position @theNASciences, got in, and never looked back #NSPNsymposium18

At the @CAPSACSP panel on post-docs w/ @Joe_S_Sparling @BerubeDo Rachel Fernandez, @krishnahegde3 @DrHaverfield #CSPC2018
#CSPC2018 @Joe_S_Sparling @CAPSACSP says you lose money for every year you train as a postdoc (on average). PhDs that go straight to the workforce are often more financially stable. Post-docs lose retirement income, forego wages (esp now they pay tax) despite high #talent
Due to unionization and internal funding, there are now more post-docs with employee status. This palliates some of those issues, but externally funded and govt post-docs are still behind esp since they are not employees, no benefits despite taxation - @Joe_S_Sparling #CSPC2018

#CSPC2018 panel on #scienceadvice starts!

@DLEKirkwood chief scientist of @NRCan says issue is not do much making sure science is valued in govt (seems it is) but to ensure evidence is used in policy. Plus, policy is inherently quicker than science.

#scipol #canpoli #cdnsci
... The challenge for new science advisors and chief scientists is to ensure that the need for #EBDM in policy is understood across the department, across govt. #CSPC2018

Starting "Voices without Frontiers" #VoicesIWS
A program by @IWS_Network to promote awareness about the challenges & lessons learned by #Immigrant and #International #WomenInScience

I was born & raised in Chicoral, Colombia. A tiny town in the middle of the Andes Cordillera.
I attended Nuestra Seรฑora del Rosario school, located in Espinal, 15Km away from Chicoral. Due to the high heat by noon, all schools start really early back home. This meant, I had to wake up at 5am to attend school every morning since I was 4 years old. #VoicesIWS
I did well in math and science in elementary and high school, so I chose to study clinical microbiology. Although coming from a low-middle income family, I was able to attend university, thanks to my parentsโ€™ effort to prioritize education over other commodities. #VoicesIWS

Trump and Mussolini: 11 Key Lessons from Historical Fascism

Italian fascism provides a better model for our moment than Nazi Germanyโ€”and the comparison is not encouraging.

By: @Anis_Shivani for @AlterNet
Thread โœ”
1/
Fascism is a religion. The 20th century will be known in history as the century of fascism.
ใ€ฐ๏ธ Benito Mussolini

2/
Iโ€™d like to draw some comparisons and contrasts between our present situation and that of #fascist Italy between 1922 and 1945. I choose fascist #Italy rather than #Nazi #Germany because it has always seemed to me a better comparison.

The Suffocation of Democracy

By: Christopher R. Browning

1/
As a historian specializing in the #Holocaust, #Nazi Germany, and #Europe in the era of the world wars, I have been repeatedly asked about the degree to which the current situation in the United States resembles the interwar period and the rise of #fascism in Europe.
2/
I would note several troubling similarities and one important but equally troubling difference.

In the 1920s, the US pursued #isolationism in foreign #policy and rejected participation in international organizations like the League of Nations.

#Hitler, who had just been named head of a #government that was legally formed after the democratic #elections of the previous November, seized the opportunity to change the system. โ€œThere will be no mercy now,โ€ he exulted. โ€œAnyone standing in our way will be cut down.โ€

At dinner, I learned more about corruption + racism built into society by our masters. A book we discussed (Zinn) was used as part of this "Left" resource's bibliography. I had to share. [A thread]

@BlackSocialistsย - thoughts on this resource?

historyisaweapon.com/indextrue.html
It very simply lays out the case that we are all being controlled. It covers hidden history of the United States including their (and, due to the systems created by our masters, our) racism.ย

If you haven't been in school for a while (or are in a terrible school), some of the words might trip you up. Dictionary.com and Wikipedia.org are two good resources to help you.

This paper attempts a more holistic look at a broader range of issues concerning AI including #regulation, #ethics, #fairness, #transparency and #accountability. However, a number of issues still remain with this paper. 3/n
