"We, with the rest of nature, have it within us to evolve through crisis, but we need to change how we see the world and...act in it. We need to think creatively and inclusively-our values and behaviours, not laws, will decide our future." @JeannetWeurman greeneracresvaluenetwork.wordpress.com/2022/06/04/dai…

The English government has created such a binfire in #ITE and #TPD #edpolicy to a point that former favourites & courtiers are now lawyering up to fight the gov’t for their survival. Students, schools & communities continue to lose out to culture wars promoted by the state. 1/7
England really is worth watching for #edpolicy. For all the wrong reasons. 2/7

For example: #ITE providers can be awarded an ‘outstanding’ (top) grade by @Ofstednews in one month and then failed on their reaccreditation by @educationgovuk two months later, like @UniofNottingham 3/7

🌍 Our 2022 #Science Board Symposium on "The #Emergent #PoliticalEconomy or #ClimateChange" kicks off with opening remarks from President David Krakauer.

Follow this 🧵 as we provide live coverage of this event all day...
"For those of you who think behavior change can prevent #ClimateChange...behavior WILL change when climate changes. Shutdowns from the pandemic resulted in a reduction of #C02 emissions of about 7.5%."
- SFI/@Harvard Prof Dan Schrag opens our speaker series today
"We *used* to talk about #ClimateChange used to be something that would happen to people in Bangladesh fifty years from now."

Re: #ClimateJustice,
"Children born today are going to deal with climate change they had no role in causing."

The first chapter of my Ph.D. thesis on the commemoration of political violence and social capital is out @JHPE_journal. The findings are from before, but some insights might be valuable to understand how did 🇷🇺 turn out this way. 🧵

In this paper, I explore the legacy of the 1930s "anti-soviet elements" arrests, or NKVD Order №00447, and recent commemoration of these events within @MemorialMoscow Last Address initiative: poslednyadres.ru

2/17
I show that political arrests commemoration might serve as a transmission vehicle for the associated effects on out-group pro-social behavior. In short: a painful past erodes social ties.

🚨 What are the political consequences of pandemics? 🚨

D. Gingerich & I analyze history’s deadliest #pandemic in a brand new @World_Pol article: “Pandemics & Political Development: The Electoral Legacy of the #BlackDeath in Germany”

doi.org/10.1017/S00438…

#polisciresearch 🧵 Image
Brief summary (#TLDR): The Black Death (BD) had a significant long-term impact on Germany’s political development. Hard-hit areas introduced proto-democratic institutions; sustained experiences with participative government later helped reject antidemocratic & illiberal parties. Image
Long overview (starting here): In 1347, Europe was hit by a pandemic that killed 30–60% of its population: the BD. It had a major impact on medieval society which was based on feudalism/serfdom. Yet the BD’s impact varied greatly across space, leading to divergence in its impact. Image

Removal of HEC chairman: Let us think beyond personalities. The #PoliticalEconomy of #HigherEducation in #Pakistan is such that whoever had challenged the status quo, system would have turned against him/her. I think following led the removal of chairman #HEC
1) #HEC R&D grants system was revamped to fund those projects only which had an impact (determined by peer review). #HEC Closed many projects which failed peer review.
2) set up #disciplinary panels for peer review headed by well-reputed scholars such as Dr Zulfiqar Bhutta, Dr Noman ul Haq, Dr Tariq Hassan, Dr Sarosh Lodhi etc., to make fund/no-fund decisions in Committee.

Two recent meta-analysis of the ex-post literature on #CarbonPricing (by @greenprofgreen & @JLilliestam etal) suggest carbon pricing is not effectively reducing emissions. This might be both a premature and misleading conclusion.

A thread.
When interpreting ex-post evaluations, we need to acknowledge that less than 10% of G20 emissions are priced at sufficient levels, more than 50% < USD 10/t

@mkalkuhl @Max_Franks_

2/N
In meta-analyses it’s also difficult to take updates in a dynamic literature into account. One example, literature on ex-post carbonpricing effects in the transport sector has seen some important methodological discussions.

1/ With financial innovations such as #sustainablefinance and #impactinvesting increasingly viewed as key to the solution of current social and environmental crises, let’s take a look at how we got here, what might be problematic about that and what to do about it. 👇
2/ This is a thread about the empirical part of my book that traces the history of #socinv in the UK. I’ll leave the theoretical argument based on Fligstein & McAdam’s strategic action field theory & pragmatist action theory for another time.

3/ Financial innovations such as #impinv or #socinv mean that firms succeed to make money from financial intermediation where they haven’t done before. To do so, these firms have to make others participate: investees wanting finance, gov to regulate (and often subsidize), etc.

Speaking at a #webinar on the Indian Health Financing Landscape, @CafeEconomics makes the following observations relating to 1) #FiscalCapacity 2) #PoliticalEconomy 3) #Federalism (1/n)

@dvararesearch @IndiaSpend
India's #PublicHealthExpenditure is well predicted by its income, however compared to neighbours and other #LMICS, its public health spending is lower. This is despite India's Tax/GDP ratio gradually rising over the years. (2/n)
The post-reform Indian fiscal agenda has been to switch away from #PhysicalCapital to #HumanCapital with increased reliance on the private sector to generate employment. Job growth however has been inadequate and the state's approach to #HumanCapital has been compensatory (3/n)

This #ManufactureOfDoubt script has been used by the #formulaindustry from the very beginning. You can see it from 19th century advertisements through today. The script is a #social one, exactly as @prof_goldberg says - and where #culturalideologies & #politicaleconomy intersect.
Perfect for some #anthropological analysis. In case of #formulamarketing, the social script for #ManufactureofDoubt exploits & enhances existing #culturalideologies of anxiety abt #breastfeeding which have been around since late 19th cent among white, upper class women & spread
#Biomedicalization of #childbirth & #infantfeeding played a key part in deepening these anxieties & facilitated the #normalization of #infantformula by mid 20th cent, esp via medical experts & hospital practices that entailed routine separation & scheduled feeding
