14 years ago today I was outed for being #bisexual and #polyamorous by a now defunct local Republican blog. Upset they weren’t getting more media attention they started sending my posts & photos to my board members & legislative leaders.

Because I deviated from the straight, monogamous norm, I was treated as a scandal per se. They felt free to dehumanize me, advocate for my children to be taken away from me and speculate wildly on who I had slept with. They constructed a tale where I traded sex for votes.
I was turning 29 in a few months and had a surprisingly successful legislative season as a lobbyist. I accomplished more in one year than anyone expected, including doubling the state’s moral obligation. I did it by being honest, sincere & transparent.
Friendship IS romance. Queer folks know this. Polyamorous folks know this. You can have friend crushes. You can friend woo someone. Friendship IS romance.
If your friendships lack romance you have shitty friends. My friends take care of me when I am sick. We take each other on friend dates. We buy each other gifts. We LOVE each other deeply. Just because there isn’t sexual involved doesn’t mean it’s not romance or real love.
I need more of us to reject the heteropartiarchal narrative even if you choose to be straight or monogamous. Practice queer poly love in your friendships. Have deep relationships of all sorts that you value!
Fuck the idea that challenging toxic norms of traditional monogamy is a “university PhD thesis worthy idea.” I learned the most about #polyamory from ppl w/out degrees. Fuck the idea that ppl without formal higher education “have less complicated stuff going on in their heads”
