Engineering a City #thread
Having spent my entire childhood in #Kochi (#Cochin ), it feels criminal to not know the story of how the city came to be the #metropolis it is today. Putting together a thread to trace the journey of the city which has been so endearingly mine (1)
Part 1: The #Malabar Mud-Banks
The story of Cochin is not just about how an engineering marvel can change social fabric, but also of many tenets of #British #Colonialism in India which is often taken for granted, passed off lazily as exploitation, missing nuance (2)
As with any coastal town, the cultural and economic history of Kochi is intertwined with maritime trade routes since the time of the Early Romans and Arabs. Thanks to the #biennale , most of us would now be familiar with the term #Muzuris (3)

1/12. Welcome to the #SolentHarbours virtual #LowTideTrail around #FortonLake. This creek has an amazing number of vessels (around 30) from barges and lifeboats, to fishing vessels and military craft.

We hope you will enjoy #archaeology from home during the COVID crisis.
2/12. Forton Lake is actually a tidal creek, meaning that the water comes and goes each day. It’s fed by sea water coming in from #PortsmouthHarbour. As the tide goes out, the skeletons of abandoned vessels are revealed in the mud. Forton Lake is about 1km in length and 150m wide
3/12. The collection spans over 100 years with boats dating from the 1800’s through to the 1960’s. There are 3 wooden barges, 2 ferries, 2 lifeboats, 3 fishing vessels, 9 military vessels & 4 unclassified vessels.

Great to be at @PortsmouthPort to see veterans disembark the @PoppyLegion cruise ship. They’ll be sat watching the Queen, @realDonaldTrump and other dignitaries in Southsea Common, but in my mind are the real VIPs in #Portsmouth today. @GMB #Dday75
Thanks to the team @PortsmouthPort and @BrittanyFerries for their help this morning. Would loved to have stayed longer but we’re now off to Normandy for more D-Day filming.

We’re now crossing the channel, heading to Normandy. Onboard are a number of ‘re enactors’, complete with uniforms and vehicles. The view leaving Portsmouth hasn’t changed too much in 75 years - for many unfortunate souls back then it was their last sight of England. #DDay75 @GMB

Beautiful morning in #Portsmouth ahead of #DDay75 commemorations. The sacrifice of so many remembered in a service on Southsea Common. Hundreds of veterans will be joined by the Queen, @realDonaldTrump and others. Public will have to watch on screens behind security barriers.
Was an honour to meet Harold Smithard - now 94. As a 19 year old Able Seaman he was on one of the first troop carriers to arrive on the Normandy coast. He doesn’t want Presidents or Prime Ministers at today’s event - says they’ve turned it into a political stunt.
Leader of Portsmouth City Council @geraldvjuk is keen the spotlight falls on veterans and not high profile guests. He wanted the public to be able to meet and greet the veterans today. The city is hosting more #DDay75 events this week where that should be possible.
