Fantastic presentation by Sophie Weeks of @polareducators at #ASSW2023 that made me think about how to communicate across knowledge systems๐Ÿงต #Arctic #Indigenous #IndigenousKnowledge #bridging #traslating #Westernscience #policymakers
with different epistemologies, ways of knowing, ontologies, understandings of nature and human existence, and axiologies, values, value judgements, and ethics.
Using #art to demonstrate that even working within one knowledge system has translation issues when shifting mediums from drawing to speaking or reading. The drawing demonstrated that objectivity is in fact a myth, having scientists all draw the same thing can demonstrate that.

Spot on @RadioFreeTom. In 2011 Ann Marie Murphy and I tried to bridge the gap between the foreign policy community and academia by highlighting the role of #pracademics (someone who is both an academic and an active practitioner in their subject area) /1 nottingham-repository.worktribe.com/OutputFile/101โ€ฆ
Combining theory and practice is one way to generate knowledge and understanding. I wrote my PhD thesis as an independent academic and practitioner employed by ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช (BMZ, GTZ, CIM) and ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ (CANGO) development agencies. But there are also real tensions between science & politics /2
In most cases, academics do not start out as #pracademics, but gradually get more involved in policy-relevant work. Murphy and I described the spectrum from more theoretical and analytical work on the one hand to more practical and applied policy entrepreneurship on the other /3

So ready for this amazing #HDLS14 panel on "Race, racism and racialization in sign language research" organized by @linasigns and @jaceyhill starring @_CooLDP @munimuninianna and Dominic Harrison (are you on Twitter Dominic?)
.@linasigns starts of with a powerful reminder and acknowledgment about the constant presence of violence and oppression against BIPOC people in this country and how BIPOC scholars are forced to exist in spaces which thrive on white supremacy and settler colonialism #HDLS14
UNM's @_CooLDP situates us within Intersectionality Frameworks such as #BlackFeministDisbility (Bailey& Mobley 2018) #BlackDeafFeminist (Chapple 2019) & outlines different branches of #CriticalRaceTheory showing each highlights different facets of intersectionality #HDLS14
