All right, here we go! My name is Zachary Hoskins, and it’s my pleasure to bring you tonight's #PrinceTwitterThread on the penultimate track from Prince’s 1999, “All the Critics Love U in New York” #1999THREAD
First of all, thanks to @PrinceThread curators @deejayumb and @EdgarKruize for inviting me back. And thanks to my fellow Purple Avengers for setting the bar so high–I’m biased, because 1999 is perennially in my Top 5 Prince LPs, but I think #1999THREAD may be the best crop yet!
@PrinceThread @deejayumb @EdgarKruize If you know who I am, it’s probably because you’ve read my blog, Dance / Music / Sex / Romance: a quixotic attempt to write in chronological order about every extant song recorded, written, and/or performed by Prince. princesongs.org

Y'all ready 2 get this #PurpleParty started? @Prince entered @Sunset Sound early May '82 to record what would become his longest electro-jam #Automatic. At over 9 minutes sending the project dubbed 1999 he began in Jan into unintentional Double LP territory
He arrived with clearly something on his mind as everything in #Automatic feels like a confession An urgent unsettling genuine desperation unfolding with lyrical themes of emotion as technology. Lockstep speak-singing in the same pattern of his drum machine.
Both principal themes at the time, spiritual & profane come into play, the latter on full display when he makes cavalier declaration of a sexual favor, the listener & backing singer @JillJones simultaneously snap to as she excitedly responds “You will?!”

#PurpleAvengers, "come out and plaaaaaaay!"

So what does this soundbite from the 1979 film "The Warriors" have to do with #Prince and ##DMSR? You'll see...

Let's play "7 Degrees of Separation: The Prince D.M.S.R. Edition!
#PrinceTwitterThread #1999THREAD
The fifth song from Prince’s 1999 album, D.M.S.R., is as much about content as it is about connections and branches on the R&B/ Hip-Hop music family tree. It can be explained in a game I play when I listen to my playlists.
It’s called 7 Degrees of Separation: The Prince Edition. It’s like Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, but with more context, and tons of music history. And it’s about Prince - what else do you need, right?

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, boys and motherfuckin’ girls! My name is Zachary Hoskins and it’s my pleasure to be part of this #PrinceTwitterThread series on one of my favorite O(+> albums, The Gold Experience! #TGE Image
When I first got wind of this series of threads, I jumped at the chance to do “Endorphinmachine.” Let me start by explaining why.
While Prince is unquestionably my favorite artist and he transcends genre, I’m still a dirty white boy from Southwest Michigan. My first musical love is good ol’ red-blooded American rock and roll.

Hi all! I’m Robin Shumays, co-host (along with @theurbanvanguard) of the webinar series The O+> Paradigm. Today I’m breaking down the post-Valentines Day appropriate Art Official Age track “Breakfast Can Wait” for the #AOAThread.
Thanks to the amazing folks behind the #PrinceTwitterThread and @deejayumb and @EdgarKruize for letting to participate once again this year! And kudos to all the threaders who have gone before me. Now let’s chat about one of my favorite tunes, Breakfast Can Wait.
#BreakfastCanWait is the 6th track on Prince’s 2014 album #ArtOfficialAge. The song was actually first released as a downloadable mp3 with the launch of the “3rdEyeGirl.com" website on February 3rd 2013.

I cannot adequately express how honoured I feel to have been asked to participate in the excellent #PrinceTwitterThread Series hosted by @deejayumb and @EdgarKruize, which this time around is focusing on Prince’s superb latter-day album, ART OFFICIAL AGE (2014).

#AOAThread
In this thread, I shall be taking a closer look at the album’s opening track, ‘ART OFFICIAL CAGE’, and exploring the extent to which discerning the mutual relationship exhibited by the track’s musical and lyrical components can aid us in our understanding of the song as a whole.
However, before I begin, I would like to first give a shout out to Chris Lacy (@chrislacy1990), who penned an article entitled “Rediscovering Prince’s Late-Career Gem ‘Art Official Age,’ Two Years On” for Albumism in 2016.

The upcoming weeks 11 contributors will dissect each track from the 2014 ‘ART OFFICIAL AGE’ album, an album many consider to be his last true masterpiece. As I don’t want to steal anyone’s thunder, I’ll stick to the basics in this introduction.
‘ART OFFICIAL AGE’ is Prince’s 37th studio album. It was released worldwide between September 26th, 2014 (Europe) and September 30th, 2014 (US) along with its sister album ‘PLECTRUMELECTRUM’. Listen to ‘ART OFFICIAL AGE’ here: open.spotify.com/album/1xRg9g9Q…

On Sampling JJ @polishedsolid weaves a fascinating alternate unknown history of JJ as the Rave Muse sampled in Breakbeat Hardcore classics rinsed at every rave in the early 90’s - perhaps spreading JJ’s legacy further afield than Paisley Park ever did....

Thx for the generous intro @deejayumb for my contribution—Sampling Jill Jones—to the superb JJ #PrinceTwitterThread series!

You can tell a lot of 💜 & care have gone into crafting those that have gone before & will follow!

@jilldjones deserves it!

"When you're coming up with different ways of getting old memories to transform - you're scratching, you're doing all this kind of sampling - what ends up happening is that you're becoming a kind of writer with sound."
~DJ Spooky (Paul D. Miller) #PrinceTwitterThread Image
This is gonna get super meta and deeply personal. I have live(d) with this record for decades! It is a part of me. So if you're looking for an impersonal thread about samples. This ain't it! #PrinceTwitterThread

“My Man” - ‘MM’ is the track that kick started it all.

MM provided the impetus that began the creative work for the @jilldjones ‘JJ’ album.

So from that POV alone, it’s a very important track.

#PrinceTwitterThread
#jilljones Image
MM was constructed over a period of 7 months at Sunset Sound.

On 10 May 1985, after finalising the configuration of the Mazarati album, P created the initial version of MM.

On 12 May 1985 P recorded overdubs & it’s also possible that JJ laid down the vocals on this date. ImageImage
In that same month, P was laying down tracks & configuring several other projects including Parade, The Family, ATWIAD, Dance Electric, Manic Monday & Roadhouse Garden.

He was also working on a no. of unreleased tracks.

And also planning UTCM & scouting for movie locations🤯 ImageImage

Hello and Good Morning.

Time for the next installment of this month's @PrinceThread in honor of Jill Jones' debut album.

You may know me as the creator, writer, and curator of #Princerversaries; but I've been a part of the music, media and entertainment biz since the late 90s.
I've worked at a plethora of record labels (Arista, Jive, Universal, Motown, Republic + more). I've also worked at MTV + a couple PR agencies. Throughout the years, I've been blessed to work on everything from studio sessions to sample clearance contracts and publicity campaigns.
I generally post informational tweets re: pop culture because I get sad when I see so much misinformation circulating amongst current and future generations of fans. But I understand that some folx don't care to hear the real from someone who has been there and done that.

What’s up, loves! My name is Rhonda Nicole and I’m a singer/songwriter and long-time Prince head. I’m absolutely over the moon to kick off this week’s special #PrinceTwitterThread all about @jilldjones and her incredible yet slept on self-titled Paisley Park debut.
A little about me...Currently, I’m the director of social media for @thenmaam. Prior to that, I was the right hand to the Fly Jock, Tom Joyner and a freelance music journalist/managing editor of the dearly departed SoulTrain dot com.
I interviewed Jill Jones for my Soul Train Artist to Artist column to chat about her third solo album, ‘I Am,’ in Feb. 2016, just days before Denise Matthews (Vanity) passed and a couple months before Prince’s death.

Part II

June & July = JJ = Jill Jones

This Part II will be a brief overview of the album from its recording to it’s release.

The individual tracks will not be covered as our contributors will dive into these.

So let’s start with the Album.

#PrinceTwitterThread #Jilljones
I wish I could drop a streaming link to this album but it isn’t on streaming platforms.

it went out of print not long after its release & is difficult to find on Vinyl & CD.

There’s a GREAT demand for a JJ SDE on translucent Pink💖Vinyl.

And it needs to come out NOW 🖤💀
Front Cover:

JJ is standing over a manhole & is pulling down her flyaway skirt to avoid exposing her underwear.

This mirrors the iconic movie poster to the Monroe classic “7 Year Itch” - Monroe standing on a subway grate as her white dress is blown upwards by a passing train.

June & July = JJ = Jill Jones

Our spotlight falls on on the @jilldjones debut album.

This is our first 🧵 on an album by 1 of the Purple Associates.

Over the next few weeks our guests will be:👇🏽
In Part 1 of this introduction I’ll take a look at JJ’s background & all her work in the P Kingdom up to the point of her debut album.

Tomorrow, in Part 2, I’ll cover the debut album to present day.
Jill Jones (JJ) is:

1 of the cultured 1’s
1 of the intellectual 1’s
1 of the beautiful 1’s

A Prince (P) collaborator for 8 years between 1982 – 1990.

1 of the most prolific & longest serving musical partnerships of his early years.

P had a hard time of letting go of people.

This is the fun track: today’s my turn to share a #PrinceTwitterThread, one of the most fun traditions amongst Prince fans. Today is a celebration of Power Fantastic, a fan favorite, and a standout for this year’s deluxe re-release of his 1987 masterwork, Sign O’ The Times.
On its own, Power Fantastic as a song teaches us about confronting fears, about intimacy, about seeing the creative process. And maybe about power. In the context of Prince’s entire career, though, it opens a window on so much more.
Take a moment and listen to Prince's warm-hearted band directions, the extraordinary and piercing vocals, the deeply personal feeling of this performance — it almost feels like we’re eavesdropping on a personal moment. You've never heard Prince like this.

So, here we are folks. Another #PrinceTwitterThread interlude. We have had wonderful threads about side 1 to 3 of the “Sign O’ The Times” album the past couple of days. Before we continue with side 4 I want to take a side step and talk about the 1987 tour for a while.
Or actually, to properly tell this story we need to go back to 1986 for a while. As during the final Prince and the Revolution tour songs from the “Sign O’ The Times” era started to surface live.
For instance the “Hot Thing” lyrics were already cited in Osaka and Yokohama in 1986, as mentioned by @Neo_Manifesto a few days ago.

Try to imagine this amazing 2 minute segment from the NYE show forming the basis of an extended instrumental version on a 12”!
Imagine it as a late hours jam B4 the love songs for that last slow dance!

I wish the Deluxe had contained a 🤯10 min instrumental of this!

Welcome to Disc 2 of Sign O’ the Times! Before I begin digging into this disc for the latest #PrinceTwitterThread, I just wanted to say thank you to @deejayumb & @EdgarKruize for spearheading the series & asking me to participate again. I am grateful & honored.
#SOTTDELUXE
This particular thread is about the opening song on Sign O’ the Times’ 2nd disc, “U Got the Look.” As the 3rd single released, it was also the biggest pop hit off the album in the US, featuring Sheena Easton on backing vocals AND has a slammin’ music video (more on that later).
If you’re reading this thread, you’ve heard this song before. I’m going to share the “Long Look” version because it’s my favorite version of UGTL & it doesn’t drastically change what made the album version so fun.

Thanks to @deejayumb and @EdgarkKruize for inviting me to do this. This is my first ever Twitter thread so apologies in advance if anything goes wrong. I’m hear to talk about Prince’s ‘Slow Love’ from Sign o’ the Times. #SOTTDELUXE #PrinceTwitterThread.
One of the things that’s always fascinated me about Prince’s career is his co-written songs. We often talk about songs he wrote for other artists, and he famously covered a variety of other artists songs, but the co-written songs in his oeuvre are more rarely discussed.
But there are a number of them, from his first single, ‘Soft and Wet’, co-written written with Chris Moon…
