I've read 6 books on product leadership and setting goals.

Top 6 secrets every product leader needs to know about: 🧵

#productmgmt #prodmgmt
1. Give teams problems to solve, not tasks to do

Set goals and let the team discover how to best achieve them. Hold them accountable only for the outcomes.

In the case of OKRs, ask your teams to propose KRs. This will build a stronger commitment and a sense of ownership.
2. Show trust instead of exercising control

This may seem difficult at first. As a rule of thumb, you should delegate and trust more than you feel comfortable with.

Make sure you provide people with context to enable better, informed decisions.

We talk a lot about "slicing the elephant" , but I've worked in a lot of products that were more like mythical creatures...

The Griffin
When leadership doesn't know what it wants to be, so it's a little bit of everything.
If you get another round of investment, this creature might evolve into a chimera ⚠️
The unicorn
Oh, the mythical animal you have very little control over and that is dependent on planet & star alignment to be born.
Many try to control this outcome, but it's a journey filled with peril, that many don't come back from.

Establishing Technical Influence as a Product Manager, with or without a technical background - a thread:

#productmanagement #prodmgmt #productmgmt #technicalinfluence
1/ First off, what is Technical Influence in the first place, and why do we need it in Product Management?

⬇️
2/ To establish Technical Influence, don’t be afraid to show your engineers what you don’t know. Sit down with them and ask them to walk you through their workflows. How do they maintain infrastructure? What languages do they use? Put yourself into their shoes.

As a hiring manager I've noticed that the single thing most #ProductMgmt people struggle with in interviews is metrics.

Most pms struggle to beyond generic metrics like retention.

Here are a few questions I use to coach PMs on choosing the right metrics to measure success.
In order to measure success you need to ground the metric in the user's goals.

1. What problem does this problem / feature solve for this user?

2. What is success for this user? Specifically what do they do, how do they feel, what don't they have to do anymore or as much.
3. What evidence does the user leave behind in your software that enables you to tell that they were successful?

4. How would you measure that? Be specific: what exact number are you looking at and for what time period are you measuring it for.

One thing we don't talk about enough in #productmgmt is how there is no ONE roadmap that rules them all. /1
I've found companies need at least 3:

1. Communicate progress of features towards product goals - Product Roadmap
2. Communicate progress of initiatives towards strategic intents - Portfolio Roadmap
3. Communicate to sales team what's coming - Sales Roadmap.

/2
Roadmaps as the end of the day are a communication tool. They need to be tailored to the audience.

I wouldn't show the detailed level of a Product Roadmap to a board in of a larger company. Too much information. This is where a lot of board meetings go south. /3

I've gotten feedback on how it feels to be part of a #productmgmt org in traditional companies.

Sharing what I'm hearing and sharing my first-hand experiences/advice in case it helps people.

I also think we can help each other. See how below.

Ok, here goes:
First, in case you missed it, here's the original thread that kicked everything off:

Now, let's get to the feedback:

1⃣ There's a collective feeling of frustration: not being able to perform our highest and best.

Now, you may not be able to change the environment, but you *can* change your approach to:

- how you practice product
- how you work with people

Don't try to grow your product too soon!

OFC you need to grow your product and get more business but when should you do it?

Before jumping into that let me tell you about the 4 main product phases

- Introduction
- Growth
- Maturity
- Decline

Let's focus on the first 2
Introduction

it's the time between you finding a problem and having people signing up without your intervention.

This is the stage where you focus on finding product-market fit for your product.
This means finding your early adopters, talk to them, understand if your product solves their problem or not

It's important to focus in understanding what problem your product solve not building features that you feel it should have.

Listen to what your users need.
