1. Never Let Me Go; Kazuo Ishiguro: A supremely crafted narrative begins unassumingly, but quickly reveals a different notion of childhood innocence and coming of age. The conversational tone fooled me into thinking I was walking into a world I understood. Nobel worthy.
2. We Should All Be Feminists; Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: As an author who breathes eloquence, Adichie doesn't disappoint. This short book/long essay is insightful and logical and human. If we want to raise boys without the toxic masculinity, this is on the required reading list.
Trying not to get sucked in, working for 5 schools means no lunch or bathroom breaks unless you take them. But, some of the good from today...
Kids (Seniors) stayed after class to watch #THUG trailer and were riveted. "Where do I sign up for book club again?"
Senior student learned how to use @OverDriveLibs "Miss. You shouldn't have shown me this."

Dear Martin was a #ProjectLITBookClub 2017-18 selection and I have yet to meet a student who doesn't wild out over this book. My copies are continually checked out/on the "extended borrow" aka "missing".
Nic came to Montbello for a little over two hours, and changed lives. She hugged and signed books, took selfies, read the first chapter of her book, and breathed life into our book starved community.

Students do not need to read The Scarlet Letter (or any other “classic” text) to become successful readers & writers. Crazy how many adults think they do. #ProjectLITchat
Just b/c it’s easier and cheaper and “safer” to run back the same books and lessons and units year after year doesn’t mean it’s right. Especially when it’s not working for a lot of our students and teachers.
And SMH at the people who are pushing for more “complex” texts while simultaneously dismissing the need for more culturally relevant texts.
