For some reason, the idea that singular they/them pronouns violate longstanding laws of grammar--and therefore shouldn't be used--refuses to die.

Here's a helpful thread on various language usage authorities endorsing singular use of they/them pronouns (THREAD):

Merriam-Webster (@MerriamWebster), the oldest full-size English language dictionary in the world, points out that singular use of they/them has been around since the late-1300s and heartily endorses such usage for non-binary persons:…

Today is the first-ever International #PronounsDay and our staff are celebrating.

Using language that empowers everyone is a critical step towards trans and nonbinary people being able to live authentically and participate fully and in all aspects of our society.
We try our best to live our values. Asking individuals what pronouns they use for themselves ensures we have the language we need to be affirming to everyone present, are not making assumptions about someone's gender, and respect the diversity of gender identities. #PronounsDay

It's the first ever International #PronounsDay! I'm so excited and I want you to be excited, too.

Here are a few things to know about pronouns:

1. Many #trans people, myself included, HAVE to out ourselves & tell people our pronouns, if we want others to gender us correctly.
YOU CAN HELP normalize this by doing a couple of REALLY simple things:

- Edit your Twitter & FB bio, email sig, etc to include your pronouns, whether you're #trans or not.

- ALWAYS introduce yourself with your name AND pronouns, eg: "I'm Danielle & my pronouns are she/her."
2. Understand that correct pronouns are NOT optional, nor a preference. In some jurisdictions, it's even against sex-based discrimination laws to misgender someone.

- NEVER say "preferred pronouns." It's not a preference. My pronouns are she/her; anything else is inaccurate.
