This is absolutely unacceptable that 4 people are competing for Seat 2 while Seat 1 only has a single candidate.
We need to be electing both seats using a single Ranked ballot.
Proportional-RCV would determine the 2 most popular of the 5 candidates.
@FairVoteWA
Since there is no difference in the districts used to select Senators and House Representatives, we could elect all 3 Seats at one time from all the candidates who want to represent their district.
That would give us even more of a #ProportionalRepresentation
Each Seat would only need 25% of the vote - a lot more demographics can get a candidate of their choosing with that % vs 50% needed now.

More GE19 Nerd analysis. A short thread about representation:
Under our corrupt, undemocratic electoral system for HoC MPs, only 9 can possibly claim a true mandate to represent their constituency.

#DemocraticAlliance4PR
#ProportionalRepresentation
#WinTogetherWithPR
#FBPPR

7 @UKLabour & 2 @Conservatives MPs received the votes of >50% of the registered electorate in their respective constituencies.
The 2 Tories are Mark Francois (50.5%) & John Whittingdale (50.1%). Neither, currently holds a ministerial post so, is not at he heart of our govโ€™t.
2/6
None of the PM, Chancellor, Secretaries of State, Ministers, junior Ministers holds a mandate from their constituency electorate.
Francois is the Chair of the ERG so does wield some power in influencing the govโ€™t.

Polls consistently show strong support for the characteristics of #ProportionalRepresentation: parties sharing power, civil debate on policy options instead of personal attacks, effective representation for (almost) all in a diverse legislature that mirrors society. Nice!๐Ÿ˜1/5
Where we have run into problems is in not openly acknowledging the inevitable conflict of interest for politicians in changing the system that just handed them power. Change becomes less appealing as soon as you find yourself in a position to implement change. Not nice. ๐Ÿ˜  2/5
The key to breaking this logjam is for politicians to show integrity and step aside, handing power back to citizens in a way that encourages thoughtful debate and evidence-based decision-making, rather than partisanship and divisive polarization. But how? 3/5

A comparison of Scotland's Additional Member System (AMS) and Germany's Mixed-Member Proportional system (MMP).

*A thread as Germany goes to the polls today *

#GermanElection2021 #wahl2021 #ProportionalRepresentation

1/
The Scottish Parliament has 129 seats in total.

73 of these are single-member districts where the candidate with the most vote wins.

The other 56 are list seats designed to reduce the inherent disproportionality of the FPTP element.

Voters get one ballot for each.

2/
Scotland is divided into 8 electoral regions with each region providing 7 list MSPs, meaning that everyone in Scotland is represented by 8 MSPs.

The list seats in each region are distributed once all the constituency seats in that region are counted.

This is that time in the election when we have smaller parties (& their members) railing against "strategic voting." This is in their self-interest, of course. But it makes the electorate materially stupider about how the First Pasts the Post electoral system works. #argh #elxn44
Under First Past the Post, all voting is really "strategic voting" unless your favourite party is leading in your riding. It's baked in. People seem to intuitively know this (eg voting to keep the Conservatives out) but they don't seem to get that this only happens under FPTP...
What bugs me is it's smaller parties (who BTW remain smaller precisely due to FPTP) who when we're not in elections often push for #ProportionalRepresentation (where strategic voting doesn't apply) but who, during FPTP elxns, confuse ppl by telling them not to vote strategically

โ€œIn the guise of transferring power from the politicians to the public, #ProportionalRepresentation really transfers power from the public to the politicians. Once the ballot boxes were locked away the coalition govt would be assembled behind closed doors.โ€

Tony Benn, 1982. Image
โ€œBy opening up the possibility of endlessly reshuffling the governmental combination, coalitions endanger the absolutely fundamental capacity of the electorates to remove governments completely.โ€
โ€œI think thereโ€™s something more honest about the Labour Party, which is a coalition, being forced to sort out its arguments before it goes to the electorate, rather than having three different manifestos published, with the final decision taken after people have cast their vote.โ€
