I have been researching relocation of people from #ProtectedAreas - v contentious – and also v nuanced. There r many issues/problems related to it, which I hope to discuss/address in my #PhD but here I share some good practices in #Wayanad #Kerala of people moving out from 1/6
#forests outside PAs. The people apply & then are funded. Conflict with #elephants is acute. Most-not all-people esp the younger generation have aspirations for better #education, jobs etc when they move out but find themselves disadvantaged as they lived in remote #forests 2/6
There is rarely skilling & other such support provided post relocation. But here, in #Wayanad the #Kerala #Forest Dept #RebiuldKerala has a program to provide skills to rebuild the lives of the displaced such as tailoring, electrical, driving etc 3/6

The Kerala Independent Farmers Association (KIFA) chairman Alex Ozhukayil said that around 20 towns and 1 lakh families in the State will be affected, according to a report by @NewIndianXpress . 1/5

newindianexpress.com/states/kerala/…
If 1km of #ESZ is demarcated from Wildlife Sanctuaries' boundaries (Kerala has 8 lakh acres+); around 4 lakh acres of human settlements, including farmlands, would come within that purview and that would be a matter of sheer survival of lakhs of people. 2n
outlookindia.com/national/why-e…
Due to the high density of human population around the #forest lands, politicians & people are demanding that human settlements must be exempted from it.
@pinarayivijayan said that the government will consider legal solutions & will raise the issue before central government. 3n

On June 3, the #SupremeCourt directed that every protected forest, national park and wildlife sanctuary in the country should have a minimum 1 km eco-sensitive zone (ESZ), from their demarcated boundaries. 1/6

#FRA2006 #ecosensitivezone

thenewsminute.com/article/sc-ord…
A few environmentalists have welcomed the order, others found it unscientific. There were also huge protests against the verdict by farmers organisations in Kerala. The eco-sensitive zones are declared to create a “shock absorber” for the protected areas. 2n
Apart from prohibiting commercial #mining, establishment of major hydroelectric projects, activities related to tourism; there are restrictions on many activities like tree felling, establishing hotels, movements of vehicles at night, ground water harvesting and so on. 3n

There's a lot of #badnews about #biodiversity and #conservation at the moment, so how about some #conservationoptimism? 🧵 based on our new paper pnas.org/doi/full/10.10… and some awesome recent work by others... 1/
As you probably know, the world has ambitious targets to protect 17% of the world's land for #biodiversity #conservation, and there are calls to increase this to anywhere between 26-60% in the next round of @UNBiodiversity talks (this year) 2/
In theory, this is great for biodiversity (more on the human impacts later). Problem is that the total area of land that you protect may not be important: a lot of #protectedareas are small or isolated, and this means that the populations are also small and isolated 3/

Thank you @IWS_Network for giving me the opportunity to share my #story 💜 ! This a part of Voices Without Frontiers program iwsnetwork.ca/voices-without… #IWS #WomenInSTEM #VoicesIWS #ecology #conservation #biodiversity
I was born in #saopaulo, #Brazil’s largest city, very different from the #Amazon Rainforest & Rio! See me and a #samauma, the most famous Amazon tree 🌳

I can say I lived in a great #rainforest because Sao Paulo & most of the coast of Brazil are in the Atlantic Forest 🌴🌺🐍. It is one of the 34 world’s #hotspots of #biodiversity, with more than 1500 plant species and 90% of original area loss. #VoiceIWS @IWS_Network Source: https://www.e-educa...

Amidst the horror of the late-2020 UK, I've got some #GoodNews to share! Alongside some #BadNews for #biodiversity and #conservation. So buckle up for some hot-off-the-press science from @UniversityLeeds @RSPBScience @oxmartinschool @naturesustainab
nature.com/articles/s4189…
1/
TLDR: we projected that ~88% of the 20,000 #species we looked at will lose habitat to farmland by 2050, and ~1300 will lose 25% (a QUARTER!) of their remaining habitat. This is #badnews and could hugely increase #extinction risks. 2/ nature.com/articles/s4189…
BUT with proactive #conservation actions we can eliminate losses! Increasing agricultural yields, shifting to healthier diets, reducing food waste, and global-scale land-use planning can, when combined, provide healthy diets for a growing population AND conserve biodiversity 2/

My piece in @MongabayIndia on relocation from #Wayanad #Wildlife Sanctuary based on my @MPhilCL @Cambridge_Uni research supervised by @EliaApos Ialso drew on my yrs of experience.Resettlement from #ProtectedAreas (PA) is contentious @csandbrook 1/22
bit.ly/3bjo3V7
& I discuss a largely ignored narrative:of people seeking support for relocation.Historically, resettlements have been poorly recorded; there have been evictions from PAs that have led to penury, isolation, further impoverishment, which I strongly condemn. There is NO room 2/22
for forced, induced, unjust resettlement. However,it is troubling that resettlement discourse has ignored the narrative of people voluntarily seeking to move out of PAs where they face immense hardship due to lack of access to education, healthcare, markets, roads, jobs, business

On #WorldElephantDay horrified to see this regressive unempathetic report from @MoEFCC  that fails to recognize the ecology & nature of #elephants, seeks to block their #RightOfPassage confine them to tiny slivers of #ProtectedAreas 1/n
It speaks of 'restricting #elephants in their natural habitat- Restricted by way of trenches , railway fences , cement structures and this is what such 'best management' practices do . 2/n
#elephants are migrants they will move...and try to break down barricades that hem in their #forests and block their passage.
