Itā€™s v interesting. During the pandemic, I got to know a lot of politicians pretty well, because EveryDoctor brought information from NHS frontline doctors to MPs every single week, which they werenā€™t hearing anywhere else. 104 MPs signed up to our #ProtectNHSworkers campaign. ā€¦
ā€¦many would check in with us regularly. I had their numbers, Iā€™d link them up with senior doctors in their area who could tell them what was happening. Many were deeply concerned. We helped them to carry out research, or ask ministers questions, or lobby for particular thingsā€¦
ā€¦that they were concerned were affecting their constituents.

And then as we emerged from the pandemic, we took the government to court (along with Good Law Project) and proved the existence of the VIP PPE lane. And we ran #ScrapNHSBill, the huge campaign to try and stopā€¦

Please read Ben Kentishā€™s tweets, and then read my short thread šŸšØ šŸ§µ. I run @EveryDoctorUK, and at the start of the pandemic we ran a campaign called #ProtectNHSworkers. Over 100 MPs came on-board, and we lobbied for changes to help frontline workersā€¦
ā€¦for context, many healthcare workers were inadequately protected, and many were dying. We were so desperate for change that we projected this onto St Thomasā€™ Hospital (opposite Parliament) on the night 29th April 2020 with the help of an incredible artistšŸ‘‡ā€¦ ImageImage
ā€¦it is extremely sobering to read the texts Ben Kentish has shared, and then to look at this government messaging below, which was shared on 1.5.2020.

Sobering is probably an understatement. Image

Do you know what I thought about this morning when I saw the cover of Matt Hancockā€™s new book? I had a flashback to a phone call I received from a doctor whose nurse colleague had just died of COVID-19, and she hadnā€™t been provided with safe PPE. I remember standing on a street..
ā€¦feeling numb with anger, and I remember crying with this doctor, standing in the middle of Brick Lane. We were running a campaign called #ProtectNHSWorkers involving over 100 MPs.

Matt Hancock failed to protect so many people. And now heā€™s published a book of hisā€¦
ā€¦diaries?

It is an insult to every single person he failed to protect during their hour of need.

Weā€™ve been highlighting the experiences of GPs over the last week, because they're in crisis mode. Now weā€™d like to share this from one of the A and E consultants in our network with you; the pressures are building in emergency departments too.
The public need to be aware of this and given clear guidance on where best to seek the help they need (from Pharmacies, GPs, A&E etc.) This will ensure NHS resources are accessed efficiently, and help safeguard patients and staff, because stories like this šŸ‘‡ cannot continueā€¦
"Every day is a game of patient Tetris. We are constantly shuffling patients out of resus into majors beds, from majors to minors beds etc. so that we can offload priorities from the ambulances. We expect this over the winter, but normally have a dip in numbers March to Juneā€¦

Our members are at the heart of everything we do. We brought these cases against the government to seek justice for NHS workers & patients who were unprotected. So, in the midst of todayā€™s legal proceedings, read, in her own words, the story of one of our GP members.
[1] The pandemic hit us in full force. Despite warnings from China & Italy, the government failed to prepare, resulting in a lack of Personal Protective Equipment, leaving us defenceless, vulnerable and fully exposed to the virus.
[2] As GPs and healthcare professionals, we care about people, and we often go above and beyond to help our patients, but should this be at the risk of our own lives and those of our loved ones?

In case you're wondering why #WhatsThePlanMatt? is trending, here's a recap:
ā° At 9.30pm we started lighting up London by projecting our key messages onto significant buildings to mark our court case against the government over dodgy PPE contracts, that kicks off next weekšŸ‘©ā€āš–ļø Image
Our first stop was NHS England, Skipton House, Elephant & Castle.
Our message:
You didnā€™t give us safe PPE šŸ˜·

Location number 2: the headquarters of @PHE_uk.
In 2016, the government carried out a flu simulation called Exercise Cygnus. The resulting report (full of recommendations for improvements) was buried & ignored. Next time we must be better prepared. #WhatsThePlanMatt? Image

So with all of our new followers, it seems sensible to tell you a little bit about who we are and what we do! EveryDoctor is a membership collective of doctors and medical students which is supportive of doctors and who believe in the NHS and what it does for all of us.
We have just over 1650 members, and we also run The Political Mess on Facebook, the largest private doctors' group of its kind, so that we can draw from as wide a pool as possible, with some small caveats.
We're an explicitly inclusive organisation, with a firm anti-racist, anti-bigotry platform which we seek to protect. We want to be a place where groups who're more vulnerable or marginalised for a range of reasons are able to speak up, so we hear their voices too.
