Thread: 56 years ago, LBJ declared #WarOnPoverty to help people our economy leaves behind, & those on whose backs it’s built. Today those programs help millions of children, seniors, people too sick to work & people whose employers don’t pay a decent wage. bit.ly/LBJ_SOU
Those programs are some of the best tools we have for pooling our resources to build an America that works for everyone. Medicare, Medicaid, Head Start and the food stamp program now known as SNAP all got started thanks to Johnson’s declaration.

We all deserve to lead healthy lives. #Medicare and #Medicaid help more than 4 million Ohioans afford healthcare, making up for some—but not nearly all—of the private sector’s failure to meet the needs of the people. bit.ly/PubSecHealthIns

@RepMikeLevin and 39 other Members of Congress have written a letter to the secretary of @USDA, Sonny Perdue to address harmful new SNAP restrictions impacting veterans. #ProtectSNAP You can read the full letter here: mikelevin.house.gov/sites/mikelevi…
@RepMikeLevin @USDA “Households with a disabled veteran are nearly 2x as likely to be food insecure as households that do not have someone with a disability.”
@RepMikeLevin @USDA “USDA should be doing more to increase SNAP participation for veterans who experience food insecurity, rather than proposing new restrictions that worsen hunger among those who have made great sacrifices for our country,” – @RepMikeLevin @RepMarkTakano

The Trump administration wants to severely restrict access to food assistance by radically changing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. I sent a letter opposing this plan, which threatens access to food for 920,000+ Washingtonians. #ProtectSNAP

SNAP is one of the most important lifelines for families facing economic hardship. This misguided and harmful policy would cut food assistance for those who need it most, exacerbating hunger and making it even more difficult for people in poverty to find work. #ProtectSNAP
It removes state flexibility, rips away food assistance from 755,000 vulnerable Americans, worsens our homelessness crisis and fails to achieve the Trump administration’s stated goal of improving self-sufficiency. It is a cruel policy that damages people and businesses alike.

Nearly 10.6 million households with adults age 50+ face the threat of hunger. They are more likely to have diabetes, depression, heart attacks & more. These conditions lead to ⬆️ health care costs that are ultimately passed onto all taxpayers through Medicare + Medicaid.
The typical elderly household enrolled in SNAP has an annual income of only $11,000. Over 80% of elderly SNAP recipients live alone, receiving an average monthly benefit of $106/month – less than $4/day. #ProtectSNAP
SNAP helps America’s most vulnerable seniors who too often are forced to choose between paying for food, medicine, rent, heat and other necessities.

Call your members of Congress right now & urge them to #ProtectSNAP!

As of this morning, Republicans are still pushing ahead for a vote on the #GOPFarmBill, which would strip more than 2 million Americans of food assistance.

So it feels like a good time to review some facts about hunger in America.

(THREAD)
For many of us, the word “hunger” evokes third-world images of kids with distended bellies. Or maybe the homeless man sitting on the subway grate. But in America in 2018, hunger and food insecurity are an alarmingly widespread experience.

In a recent national survey conducted by @amprog, nearly 40% of Americans report that they or someone in their immediate family faced serious problems with “having too little money to buy food”—just within the past year. americanprogress.org/issues/poverty…
