As a follow-up to my article on the #WorldCup2022 for @PillarCatholic, a couple of notes on religious aspects of this tournament.
pillarcatholic.com/world-cup-feve…
1. This is the first time the World Cup is being played in a Muslim country, and only the second outside of the traditionally Christian world. The first was South Korea & Japan in 2002.
2. 2002 also marked the furthest a traditionally Muslim country ever progressed in the World Cup, with #Turkey placing 3rd, after beating South Korea in a very exciting game.

David Scott never really knew his older brother, John. John was born disabled and sent to the #fernaldSchool in Waltham. And with the Scott Family being in Roslindale, and poor, and not having a car, getting to Waltham wasn't easy.
John died at the age of 7, and was buried in a grave marked only with a number, and with a letter: C or P, meaning either #Catholic or #Protestant. Those were the options. He was buried here.
It's difficult to keep track of records. Advocates have been trying. metferncemetery.org/bio/C-154

#TodayinHistory in 1875, the 1st ordained Filipino #Protestant pastor, & founder of the 1st indigenous Protestant church in #PH (@IEMELIF), Nicolás Zamora, was born in #Binondo #Manila #PH. His father was nephew to Fr. Jacinto Zamora (1 of the #GOMBURZA). THREAD. #PH #history Image
The unjust execution of the #GOMBURZA in 1872 opened the eyes of Filipinos to the rampant abuse & corruption of the Spanish colonial regime against Filipinos. Fr. Jacinto Zamora, the youngest of the 3, lost his mind prior to being executed.
Jacinto's nephew, Paulino, harbored resentment vs. the oppression. Discontented w/ the religion of the friars, he began to smuggle Spanish Bibles w/c were forbidden at the time. During #PH Revolution in 1896, he was arrested & exiled to Chafarinas Islands in the Mediterranean.

#TodayinHistory in 1835, Jacinto Zamora y del Rosario, one of the unjustly executed #GOMBURZA, is born in Pandacan, #Manila #PH. He was one of those who campaigned for fair treatment of his fellow Filipino (secular) priests under the Catholic Church in #PH. (THREAD) Image
Born to Don Venancio Zamora, former capitan municipal of Pandacan, and Doña Hilaria del Rosario, Zamora studied in @LetranOfficial and later on, in @UST1611official obtaining a degree in Theology & Canon Law in 1858. He was ordained a priest, serving in Marikina, Pasig, & Lipa.
He was eventually appointed to serve in the Manila Cathedral. Zamora would be friends w/ other reform-minded priests, Jose Burgos & Mariano Gomes, who advocated for the Catholic Church in Spanish #PH, dominated by friars, to consider qualified Filipino priests to hold parishes.

#Corbin was one of a group of young #Protestant intellectuals in #Paris who discovered the work of #KarlBarth (1886-1968) the Swiss reformed theologian whom he met in Bonn in 1931 1/
Barth was known for his dialectical theology starting with his Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans (#DerRömerbrief) published in 1919; in 1934 he openly opposed Nazi authority insisting upon the absolute sovereignty of the divine and returned to Switzerland 2/
‘Faith is awe in the presence of the divine incognito; it is the love of God that is aware of the qualitative difference between God and man and God and the world’ 3/

Interesting results on people's self-described national identity in Northern Ireland from 2016-2018 using @ARK_info NI Life & Times survey data when considering the variable of religion.

Breakdown of respondents is roughly 4/10 Catholic, 4/10 Protestant & 2/10 No Religion.

1/4
We see that 2016-2018 there has been very little change since 2016 in the proportion of #Catholic respondents saying they have Irish-only and predominantly-Irish identity.
Notably, c.1 in 10 describe themselves as having an 'other' identity.

Here are the 2018 results 👇
2/4
There has been a significant shift among #Protestant respondents towards having a more exclusively British identity.
That said, the proportion saying that their identity is (at least) mainly British has remained stable after a boost in 2017.
