There are lots of things that will pay off in #California as #preparation for upcoming heatwaves and wildfires, *now* (when it's cool, and when it's not during fire season) is the time to get them done.
1. Improve the insulation in your house. Most older California homes are under-insulated. Add a layer of insulation to your attic. Tax deductible, usually, pays for itself. Can dramatically lower your temps. during heatwaves.
2. Make adjustments to make your landscaping more fire resistant. Lots of resources from CALFIRE here: readyforwildfire.org/prepare-for-wi…

#Breaking: The CPUC Public Advocate's office is recommending a $165M fine against PG&E for the company's Fall 2019 power shutoffs/#PSPS. The bulk of the proposed fine stems from 1,500 customers with medical needs getting no advanced notice about the shutoffs from PG&E.
The advocate's office notes that critical facilities like hospitals and fire depts also got no notice from PG&E, nor did tens of thousands of others.
All told, 1.7 million customers (that's maybe 5M people) lost power. The advocate's office provided this chart for comps @kqednews
PG&E has acknowledged problems with notifying customers during the 2019 power shutoffs, but has called its efforts in 2019 "effective, appropriate, and reasonable." It says penalties aren't warranted.

🚩🔥 We are expecting very high fire danger & a @PGE4Me #PSPS in Berkeley starting Sunday.

While we have had many Red Flag Warnings this year, this event poses a greater threat. Hills residents should consider leaving before Sunday afternoon. 1/

cityofberkeley.info/City_Manager/P…
@PGE4Me Forecasts project winds in the region to be as strong or stronger than those present during 2019's devastating Kincade Fire and the 2017 wine country fires. Combined with record-low moisture levels, these winds are expected to create the most dangerous weather so far this year 2/
@PGE4Me .@PGE4Me has told the City that it anticipates 1,500 Berkeley customers will likely be impacted by the #PSPS. We expect the area east of Claremont and around Panoramic Hill to be affected.

Use the PG&E address lookup to see if you will be impacted: pgealerts.alerts.pge.com/addresslookup/ 3/

New work led by @climate_guy & featuring @weathertrader, @pyrogeog, @tomwptak, & me on California fire weather & PG&E's "Public Safety Power Shut-offs!" We were motivated by widespread, prolonged, & disruptive events in 2019. (1/5) iopscience.iop.org/article/10.108… #PSPS #CAwx #CAfire Image
We find 2019 fire wx conditions were indeed exceptional in decadal context. However, we were unable to replicate widespread extent of PG&E's actual PSPS outages using publicly-stated weather thresholds (big difference near SF Bay Area especially). iopscience.iop.org/article/10.108… (2/5) Image
We find numerous pockets within PG&E service area subject to 2 or more PSPS events per year, even under typical conditions. Frequency & extent of PSPS risk zones highly sensitive to exact wind threshold used, w/high inter-annual variability. iopscience.iop.org/article/10.108… (3/5) ImageImage

Watching PG&E CEO Bill Johnson grinding his teeth on live television, it's gonna be quite a week
He says PG&E has 4500 workers out trimming trees but that it essentially doesn't matter because of "these wind storms" uh
PG&E will "do another meteorology run or two" and decide Wednesday afternoon if the power will be shut off. Reminder that the CPUC's deenergization rules call for consumer notice "as feasible and appropriate". #PSPS Image

1/ It's time for another quarterly briefing from the #GridEdge team @WM_PowerRenew! We cover tech, business models, and policy/regulation in the grid edge space, at both customer and distribution levels. Some key observations about Q3 2019:
2/ Q3 2019 saw a huge bump in disclosed investment in the grid edge space. The majority (>$1b) is capital from Volkswagen, Goldman Sachs and BMW for Northvolt's battery gigafactory, connecting 2 hot markets: storage & EVs.
3/ A notable M&A transaction also focuses on EV: @EDF_Renewables NA acquired PowerFlex Systems, a smart charging platform, echoing other energy players’ interest in EVs. (Note that you can download more Q3 figures here: bit.ly/2BtDlFk)

“Terrible management...” Governor Gavin Newsom went IN on PG&E today on power shut-offs, poor management and the utility’s aging infrastructure. I don’t remember the Governor ever being this harsh on the utility #PSPS #PGEpowershutdown @FOX40
