Thread: Thanks to the work of #PublicBank activists, we are bringing the Public Banking conversation to Long Beach city council. Tomorrow (Tuesday) at 5pm, we will be encouraging city council to ask the City Manager to conduct a feasibility study on Public Banking in Long Beach.
This is the 1st major step in making a #LongBeachPublicBank a reality. Here’s an excerpt of the letter that @fightdenial and I sent to every city council member: Last year, the Public Banking Act (#AB857) was passed in the CA legislature and was signed into law by Gov Newsom.
This bill was supported by @AsmPatODonnell and @SenGonzalez_33. #AB857 allows local governments to apply for a banking charter from the Department of Business Oversight (DBO) to establish a public bank.
In the last two years, we’ve learned that #resistance means getting involved at all levels of government. Our members have doorknocked with @swingleft, lobbied for police demilitarization in Sacramento, met often with Congressional staff and rallied for #FamiliesBelongTogether 1/
Our members are working at the state level to craft new gun control legislation and organizing at the City level for a #publicbank. We continue to pressure @SpeakerPelosi and @SenFeinstein to sign onto the #GreenNewDeal. We want #Medicare4All and we won’t accept a racist wall. 2/
In the last two years, we’ve organized countless phone banks, text banks and postcard campaigns. We’ve learned about burnout. We also learned how crucial it is to amplify the voices of organizations that have been around and in the trenches far longer than we. 3/
