Over 1 million people in Puerto Rico are without power after Hurricane Fiona caused "catastrophic" damage and landslides.

The power grid is still recovering from 2017's Hurricane Maria and may not be fixed for "several days."

Almost 200,000 people have no access to clean water. ImageImageImage
3,000+ homes in #PuertoRico still have blue tarps instead of roofs after 2017's Hurricane Maria.

The U.S. only gave the U.S. territory 2/3 of what it needed for repairs — after delays by Trump.

Most still hasn't reached communities, and some say they "have to start over again." Image
Up to 90% of homes in Puerto Rico are now reportedly without power after #HurricaneFiona.

The island of over 3 million U.S. citizens is still rebuilding 5 years after Hurricane Maria:
▪️ Only 21% of recovery work complete
▪️ Some forced to repair homes themselves after no help ImageImageImage

Five years ago, #HurricaneMaria devastated the island of #PuertoRico, resulting in billions of dollars in damage. Residents struggled without electricity for months and still experience frequent, long-lasting power outages.
.@ORNL experts have been working with local organizations, nonprofits and universities to build resilience into independent #microgrids powered by renewable energy.
.@ORNL engineers built a #microgrid “orchestrator” that will autonomously manage the microgrids, minimizing impacts of power outages and keeping critical services available.

#PuertoRico is back in the news.

That Other America breaches the US media consciousness every couple of years. The Bad President put it in the news by his horrific, racist failure to respond to Hurricane Maria:… 1/ The cover of the 2015 Bold Type Books edition of Nelson A De
And the Good President put Puerto Rico in the news by sidelining its elected government because they had the temerity to stiff his buddies on Wall Street, just like GW Bush did to Flint when they crossed the same line:… 2/
The finance bros that Obama put in charge of the island turned it into an offshore Flint, starving its utilities in order to extract more debt payments to the finance sector. 3/

My wife and I decided to take a sabbatical year here in #PuertoRico so I could write a book, learn Spanish and enjoy the beach. We have two boys and when we looked for schools we were absolutely shocked at how far these local schools are behind. It's nearly a time capsule here.
Because of this, it was an immediate call to action and service to the children of this island for us. Everyone here is an American, and many things in #PuertoRico are at an American standard (USPS, NPS, etc.) However, the schooling here is definitely NOT! It's nearly 3rd world.
What I thought was going to be a relaxing year off has become an adventure. I created a non profit called Tech My School Our mission is to improve the education on the island through improved systems, capacity building, and student empowerment.

Puerto Rico is experiencing an island wide electricity blackout and people are also reporting not having potable water either as a result. You know where the Governor is? Away overseas because he was running away from a scandal about developing protected land. Impeccable timing.
Updates on the cause of the electricity blackout in Puerto Rico & the ETA for service being reinstated. 👇🏼
I hope that while news of Puerto Rico’s island wide electricity outage is all over US mainstream media tomorrow, they don’t let you look past how it was the USA who imposed the privatization of electricity that brought us this instability on top of raising billing 6x since JUNE.

Interesting way that different public services in Puerto Rico are announcing they’re going on strike with Teachers in demand of better salaries & conditions. Its an organized simultaneous “flu” absenteeism & each has a color.

Last weekend, thousands of Teachers marched to the Governors mansion asking for better salaries. The Governor offered a temporary 2 yr $1k raise but said nothing of their pensions. Teachers plan on continuing more protests in union w/ other public workers.
Firefighters are the most recent ones to announce they’re going on strike. The decision came after the Governor of Puerto Rico said “if they wanted better salaries they should’ve picked different jobs” during a press conference this afternoon.

Nieuws & Cijfers over #Omikron

Wednesday's #Covid19 megathread makes an early start as there's so much news to bring you!

#Omicron takes centre stage in Europe with a raft of records (recap coming up), but #UK ministers are increasingly confident the NHS won't be swamped despite England's lack of restrictions
It turned out to be a terrible Tuesday, not just in #UK, which was just one of TEN European countries to hit all time high daily #Covid19 infection numbers.

#Cyprus #France #Greece #Iceland #Italy #Malta #Montenegro #Portugal and #Spain the others to set new records.
Concern in #Norway. The #Omicron wave looked to be beyond the peak; is it making a comeback or is it still delayed Christmas cases?
4,702 new #Covid19 infections, fewer than 100 down on last Weds.

Better health data. 315 in hospital, down 13 since y'day, although 120 are in ICU

Monday's #Covid19 thread starts here. Still holidays around the world for many, including #UK. But here all eyes on Boris Johnson - will he, or won't he make more restrictions or even lockdown? We should know today.

I've got more hospital data in the thread, updated real time..
So let me start with #UK. I've managed to get new health data, which will be critical to the decision on new restrictions in #England

As of y'day there were 7,536 #Covid19 patients in English hospitals; up 17.1% in a week.

But 2,425 of those are in London and that's up 45.5%
Strangely, South-East & South-West areas of #England have fewer #Covid19 patients in hospital.

Occupied hospital beds by region (weekly change):

#London 2,425 +46%
#Midlands 1,345 +17%
#East 681 +16%
#NorthWest 945 +8%
#Yorkshire/NE 847 +3%
#SouthEast 803 -2%
#SouthWest 490 -5%
