#PuLa Today is the 101st Janmatithi of the great Purushottam Laxman ('Pu La') Deshpande - one of the most beloved personalities of the Marathi speaking world.

Here is a long thread (articles, videos, references), which I had compiled last year to celebrate his birth centenary.⬇️
Great to see Google honoring #PuLa today, on his 101st birth anniversary.

This is something that has been on my mind for a long time. A humble attempt at explaining why the average Pune 4 teenager has no clue who Pu La is, forget reading and listening to his work.

In the 80's and 90's Maharashtrian families in Pune 4 started

getting their kids admitted in English and specifically convent schools than before. This was also the time the US immigration wave really took off and in the mid 90's it was almost impossible to find a house in the zipcode where at least one child was not in the US as an IT
engineer. I have spent time with Indians from all states in the US and for some reason, I found we were pretty much the only people who almost felt ashamed of Marathi and did not see anything wrong with their kids not knowing Marathi. In fact it was almost a matter of pride.

Today is the 20th Punyatithi of Purushottam Laxman 'Pu La' Deshpande - one of the most loved personalities of the Marathi speaking world.

#PuLa was not just an author and a humorist; but also an actor, a musician, a composer, a film maker, and much more.

#PuLa was also an active supporter of many social initiatives, including science outreach. While not active in politics, he did make some important speeches during the 1975 Emergency.

Here is one more collection (thread) from 2018, which I had compiled.

Today's #MuseumsUnlocked topic is so interesting to me that I like to share an entire thread, instead of few tweets.
In all the territories of their Empire, #Romans built cities that always share common features and monuments: one of the most recognizable was the #Amphitheatre
Let's start our trip to the Romans amphitheatres from the Capital. The Flavian Amphitheatre, alias the #Colosseum (72-80 AD), is still the most iconic monument of #Rome. It could hold 50-80.000 people, assisting a variety of public spectacles, even sea battle! #MuseumsUnlocked
Also the already mentioned #Aquileia used to have its own amphitheatre, built in the I cent AD. Preserved only in remains, it was identified in the XIX cent. by E. Maionica and is currently under investigation by @UniVerona: looking forward for new discoveries! #MuseumsUnlocked

Today is the 100th birth anniversary of the great Purushottam Laxman Deshpande - one of the most beloved personalities of the Marathi speaking world.

He was often affectionately referred to just by his initials, 'P.L.' or 'Pu La'.

#PuLa was born in Mumbai on November 8, 1919.
#PuLa was not just an author and a humorist; but also an actor, a musician, a filmmaker, a rationalist, a science enthusiast and much more.

He wrote how Shivaji Maharaj, Tilak, Balgandharva are the most loved personalities of Maharashtra. I think Pu La also belongs to that list.
#PuLa studied at Parle Tilak Vidyalaya, and later at Fergusson College in Pune. He spent many years of his life in Mumbai and later on in Pune. He also briefly worked in Delhi, in the early days of Doordarshan.

I think first and foremost, he was a keen observer of people.
