Okay #BachelorNation. My name is Emily Joy, I'm a lesbian with an unhealthy obsession with this show, I have a degree in philosophical theology & apologetics from Moody Bible Institute, and if you're wondering what the fuck is going on I'm here to break it down. #TheBachelorette
In last night's episode @AlabamaHannah referenced the biblical story of the woman caught in adultery & the words of Jesus when he said, "let he who is without sin cast the first stone." The story she's referring to can be found here in the gospel of John: biblegateway.com/passage/?searc…
Now a couple interesting things to note: 1) unlike a lot of other Jesus stories, this one is found *only* in the gospel of John & not the others, and 2) there is good scholarly consensus that this bit of John was added later and was not a part of the original text of the gospel.

0. Redoing earlier thread as after discussion with @AngryBlackLady, @memnosoncos, and others I’ve agreed that while the original hashtag speaks to earlier self-definition, it’s better to use #ExForcedBirth as a clear rejection of the false “pro-life” framing.

#Exvangelical
1. When you grow up evangelical, you have the message that “abortion is murder” and “a literal holocaust” pounded into your head from early childhood. For many in the #Exvangelical community, men and women, these extremist lies can be very hard to shake.

#ExForcedBirth #Resist
2. Even the brilliant @rachelheldevans, who recently died far too young, could only bring herself to argue against single-issue voting on abortion and that it was hardly pro-life to support so many inhumane policies while being anti-choice

1) I shared my experiences with sexual abuse and #PurityCulture in Christian schools, and a portion of that experience appears in this @nytimes article. Now I want to talk about recovery. nytimes.com/2019/01/29/us/…
2) Yesterday someone remarked that I’d “marched right over” these experiences, and turned out great. I guess it could loom that way. I’m thriving in school, headed to law school in the fall, I’m happy and healthy with a great support system and a clear sense of self.
3) But the way they phrased it, “marched right over,” took me aback. It felt so trivial. Now, anyone who has experienced trauma knows that the healing process is not easy, that it requires work and dedication and there are a dozen low points for every victory.

How do you go about defining an entire way of life? How do you take concepts that were *literally* taught in the cradle and turn them into words others can understand and relate to?

Because this is #PurityCulture. This is life for a fundy child, raised by the patriarchy.
I’m a Pastor’s child, an MK, the product of multiple generations of holiness people, most of whom were preachers.

I was served up School of Tomorrow’s ACE curriculum from grades K-12, except the year we used CLE curriculum... which is actually worse.

#ExposeChristianSchools
It’s only with the birds’ eye view of years and philosophical distance that I can look back and say “That was abuse. Pure and simple.”

ACE is Calvinistic to the core, which made it an odd choice for a family that believed John Wesley stood next to Jesus’ cross.

Me today, watching the #gc2summit on #churchtoo:
Kicking this thing off by singing the lyrics of "Amazing Grace"- a song about the repentance of a middle passage slave trader- I think is going to be pretty emblematic for today.

God loves us even thought we're BAD is probs going to be a major theme. #churchtoo #gc2summit
"Nothing can be healed without you, without your spirit."

Uh. False.

I’m finally reading Pure by @LindaKayKlein, and I’ve decided to tweet a thread of quotes and observations over however long it takes me to finish. I’ve just started, and I’m already impressed by the prose and the insights.

On page 3, Klein brilliantly links Freud’s concept of the taboo to the evangelical understanding of a stumbling block. Freud: “A person may become permanently or temporarily taboo” if this person incites “forbidden desires of others” and awakens “the ambivalent conflict in them.”
Klein:

“After all, my sexual energy, sometimes off-color humor, and the ‘50s pinup va-va-voom of the hips I’d recently acquired were already worrying some in my community.”

“I was taboo—guarded and guarded against—long before I had ever done anything ‘wrong.’”

She was sixteen.

Joshua Harris is apparently discontinuing publication of I Kissed Dating Goodbye & its followups (including Boy Meets Girl which I would argue is maybe worse). Great. Eventually maybe I won't have to keep buying every copy I find in a thrift store so no one else does.
Let's take a look at his "explanation" (I won't call it an "apology" since that implies genuine repentance and a good faith effort to do something to fix the actual problem at hand but okay)… Link here or in the pictures below joshharris.com/statement/
