Me today, watching the #gc2summit on #churchtoo:
Kicking this thing off by singing the lyrics of "Amazing Grace"- a song about the repentance of a middle passage slave trader- I think is going to be pretty emblematic for today.

God loves us even thought we're BAD is probs going to be a major theme. #churchtoo #gc2summit
"Nothing can be healed without you, without your spirit."

Uh. False.

I’m finally reading Pure by @LindaKayKlein, and I’ve decided to tweet a thread of quotes and observations over however long it takes me to finish. I’ve just started, and I’m already impressed by the prose and the insights.

On page 3, Klein brilliantly links Freud’s concept of the taboo to the evangelical understanding of a stumbling block. Freud: “A person may become permanently or temporarily taboo” if this person incites “forbidden desires of others” and awakens “the ambivalent conflict in them.”
Klein:

“After all, my sexual energy, sometimes off-color humor, and the ‘50s pinup va-va-voom of the hips I’d recently acquired were already worrying some in my community.”

“I was taboo—guarded and guarded against—long before I had ever done anything ‘wrong.’”

She was sixteen.

Joshua Harris is apparently discontinuing publication of I Kissed Dating Goodbye & its followups (including Boy Meets Girl which I would argue is maybe worse). Great. Eventually maybe I won't have to keep buying every copy I find in a thrift store so no one else does.
Let's take a look at his "explanation" (I won't call it an "apology" since that implies genuine repentance and a good faith effort to do something to fix the actual problem at hand but okay)… Link here or in the pictures below joshharris.com/statement/

#Evangelical Women demonize female victims over male perps because they have been trained to view women, unable to, or , punished for consent as the "Bad Girls". When Vashti is demonized for saying no, and Bathsheba is a temptress for being unable to say no. #EmptyThePews [1]
Vashti said no to protect herself. Xerxes wanted to treat her like a piece of meat. She said no. Therefore, according to Christians, she was disobedient. For refusing to be demeaned into an object. #EmptyThePews [2]
Bathsheba would have been terrified to say no to David. Saying no to someone in authority could have resulted in her death. But instead of seeing her as someone a lust-driven king took advantage of, Christians are trained to see her as a vile temptress. #EmptyThePews [3]

Q: how did #purityculture fuck up my life?

A: how long you got? a thread..

#Exvangelical #ChurchToo

1/?
purity culture is the pervasive set of beliefs, structures, & actions that place a heavy focus on the virginity & "physical/spiritual/emotional purity" of women/girls

2/
it is heavily influenced by patriarchal beliefs such as male headship, women being unable to serve in the same capacity as men in the church (& sometimes world at large), complementarian gender roles (women are made to run the home, men to provide by working), etc

Story time, #emptythepews edition.

Warning: suicidal ideation, depression, conversion therapy, unsupportive parents, Christian fundamentalism.

You have been warned.

Story begins in the next tweet.
1: Once upon a time in the late 90s, there were common websites, basic cable and magazines that put out various hotlines you could call in a crisis. If not, there were search engines where you could find the numbers to places like BoysTown and the Suicide Prevention Hotline etc.
2: My parents were SUPER controlling. So much so, that we felt the control in every little way, and suspected other means of control that we did not verify until we had all moved out.
Raised in the QF/ATI-adjacent communities, you can guess at what levels there were,.

I've finally (like 20+ years after first being exposed to #purityculture) figured out how to articulate yet another way that Evangelical culture left me emotionally scarred. It never seems to end. #exvangelical #emptythepews Here I go yet again:
Whenever I've read about how purity culture messes up people's lives, it's usually how it's affected ideas/perceptions of sex, how these things can lead to bad relationships, abuse, etc. For me, yeah, same as many others: it meant I didn't know how to even talk to a guy,
and every Christian guy I met was a potential spouse. We were encouraged to pray for our future spouses who we'd never met before. The usual purity culture junk.
