Excerpts from "'America’s Post-Pandemic Geography' - Covid-19 is transforming all types of communities, from big cities to suburbs to rural areas" - from the Summer 2021 Issue of @CityJournal - by @Richard_Florida & @joelkotkin. A #Thread.

1. "The #Pandemic will pass...But in geographic terms, today’s Covid-precipitated crises may well prove to be the most transformative event that #America has experienced since the great migration to the suburbs after World War II."
2. "....centrifugal forces pull some people out of #Cities: families seek more #Affordable space, backyards, and access to better schools. With the wider scope of choice that #RemoteWork affords, some are casting their nets wider and moving farther afield..."

Today our team @hope4college releases the largest national survey conducted during the pandemic.

For #RealCollege community members, you’ll note this is our 6th annual report.

So what’s new? What surprised me? What now? A 🧵

Full report: hope4college.com/rc2021-bni-dur…
Let’s start with #COVID. It has deeply affected #RealCollege students.

13% of these 200K students lost a loved one. Twice as many among Latinx students.

Whatever the “return to college” looks like, it’s going to be marked by trauma.
Many, including our team, have been calling for increased #mentalhealth supports for years and years— particularly for #communitycollege students.

Listen to the students in our latest data— now is the time to invest👇🏻

@Sandroka131 @KennedyAlencar @LulaOficial @UOLNoticias Gostei muito das ponderações do #filósofo @ghiraldelli qdo se referiu a esta #incapacidade de mobilização "pro-nobis" (o nós antes do eu) q permeia até supostos movimentos de #diversidade #racial e inclusão sócio-econômico-cultural, como qdo comenta sobre a #solo #djamilaribeiro

Almost 50% of Black Americans say that they would NOT get a #COVID19 vaccine - not bc they don't believe in #science, but instead bc "9% of Black adults feel very confident that a vaccine will have been properly tested or will be distributed fairly". axios.com/black-american…
My friend @choo_ek has been calling attention to this issue for months.

We have a small window to do right- to prove that science prioritizes and respects those who are most at risk, and who have been disrespected in the past.

And we must plan NOW for how to address #racial equity when distributing the eventual #COVID19 vaccine.

This is a chance for #publichealth and science to "become agents of change toward improving social and racial justice"

1/ Q: Talk to me about history. What historical factors contributed to many U.S. cities becoming highly segregated, and how is this related to the #racial inequities in #COVID19 we are seeing today?
2/ A: In the interview linked to below, Reggie Jackson, Head Griot of America's Black Holocaust Museum, describes 4 discriminatory housing policies and practices common in the first half of the 20th Century.

3/ Note that all of these were completely legal up until the Fair Housing Act of 1968--just 52 years ago. These practices and policies played a major role in creating the patterns of racial segregation seen today in Milwaukee and many other U.S. cities.

Still processing the powerful discussion we had today in our #MA @ARUSociology session on #DecolonisingtheUniversity. A student shared her experiences of growing up in apartheid South Africa & feeling validated & 'seen' by the reading material. Became emotional as she talked
about how #apartheid affected her secondary & higher education in South Africa. Another shared his experiences of racism & racial abuse at his place of work in London, and how he'd envisioned a different kind of life in the UK when he migrated from Nigeria three years
ago. A third talked about being British in Zimbabwe and how her family had tried to convince her that the 'whites' were there to help the 'black people' and how she learnt to resist the 'civilising' narrative of #empire. A fourth discussed how her godfather rolled his eyes at her

2. As @renireni pointed out in Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race:

"Riots always seem to kick off in the summer." 🔥🔥🔥

In 1919, there were riots in:

🔸#Baltimore
🔸#Omaha
🔸#Newport
🔸#Liverpool

3. According to the #history, a #black man insulted a #white woman in #Newport, which lead to an altercation. It kicked off in #GeorgeStreet [see below], where 3000 white people formed into a mob and attacked the houses of the two black people on the street.
