Incidentally, #Ganeshutsav was popularised by #LokmanyaTilak in the backdrop of the Hindu-Muslim riots in 1893-94. It soon replaced #Muharram, which was then the most popular festival in the Bombay Presidency, with massive participation from Hindus
The #Ganeshutsav at #Dadar in #Mumbai, saw donations being collected from people across castes. However, the organising committee was dominated by Brahmins, who kept other groups away from it. The singers and religious orators were also Brahmins. In short, they ran the show.

श्री शिवाजी रायगड स्मारक मंडळाची स्थापना लोकमान्य टिळकांच्या पुढाकाराने १८९५ साली झाली. प्रामुख्याने दोन उद्दिष्टे डोळ्यासमोर ठेऊन ही स्थापना केली गेली. त्यातील पहिले म्हणजे गडावरील समाधीची व इतर वास्तूंची देखभाल, दुरुस्ती व जीर्णोद्धार (contd)
आणि दुसरे म्हणजे शिवपुण्यतिथीचा अभिवादन कार्यक्रम करणे, शिवचरित्राचा प्रचार, प्रसार करणे. सन १८१८ मध्ये मराठेशाहीचा अस्त झाला आणि किल्ले रायगडही ब्रिटिशांच्या ताब्यात गेला. ब्रिटिशांनी सर्वच किल्ल्यांवर जायला बंदी आणली.
या काळात रायगड पूर्णतः दुर्लक्षित होता. महाराजांच्या समाधीची दुरावस्था झाली होती. सन १८८३ साली जेम्स डग्लस नावाचा इंग्रज गृहस्थ शिवचरित्र वाचून महाराजांच्या जिज्ञासेपोटी गडावर गेला. रायगडच्या व महाराजांच्या समाधीच्या दुरावस्थेविषयी त्याने लिहून ठेवले.

त्यानंतर स्वतः छ.शाहू महाराजांनी त्याकाळी स्वतः कडून 5000रुपये टिळकांकडे सुपूर्त केले, त्यानंतर म्हणजे टिळकांचा शेवटपर्यंत म्हणजे 1920 पर्यंत एक दगड देखील बसविला नाही, ते आजारी असताना त्यांनी जाहीर केले कि मी हे पैसे एका संस्थेत टाकले आणि ती संस्था बुडाली... (1/n)
