While we know Puri mainly for the #RathaJatra , #Jagannath Temple, and Konark, the place has many other worth watching sights too. Being Odisha's cultural center, it's a treasure trove of art, heritage and history.
Puri has what is called as the Pancha Thirtha, the 5 sacred tanks, which makes the pilgrimage complete. The Pancha Thirtha are Indradyumna, Rohini, Markandeya, Swetaganga and Mahodadhi which is basically the Sea itself.
Indradyumna Tank is located near Gundicha Ghar, where the deities are taken to during the #RathaJatra. Named after the legendary king of Puri, it is believed to have been formed by trodding of 1000s of cows which the King donated to Brahmins after the Asvamedha Yagna.

One of the highlights is visiting the potters colony, which provides about 15,000 new clay pots to the temple every day. They're used for cooking the 56 different dishes that are offered as holy food to the deity and later sold to devotees as mahaprasad.
Men carry the pots of all sizes to the temple in baskets on their heads. They walk barefooted for purity. It's an astonishing and captivating sight. The men must be so strong!

Every year for the #RathaJatra, three huge rathas or chariots are made by artisans in Puri. Traditionally they are divided into seven categories, called sapta-rathakāras, 'seven makers of the ratha'. These traditional craftsmen hence preserve the ancient art of making rathas.
This thread is about the rathakāras, their functions and how these units of servitor-artisans work separately yet together to build the harmonious rathas. #RathaJatra
1. Mukhya Mahāraṇā or Guṇākāra (ମୁଖ୍ୟ ମହାରଣା ବା ଗୁଣାକାର) : Three maharanas plan, engineer and supervise the construction of the three rathas respectively. The method of building a ratha in the Kalingan idiom is a very specialised skill, carefully preserved for centuries.
