This is HUGE:

Tennessee becomes first state to announce higher reading outcomes than pre-pandemic, with higher ELA proficiency than 2019.

"The highest proficiency the state has seen in the last five years" in BOTH elem & HS.

#Reading360 pays off!

Y’all know that @TNedu has been pulling out all the stops on literacy.

Its #Reading360 teacher training, developed by @TNedu in partnership with @TNTP has earned, incredibly-high marks.

99.5%! This is like the unicorn of training.
But the really distinguishing thing that Tennessee did was get high-quality curriculum into virtually every district, as @lisacoons10 explained to @natwexler.

That #TNBestForAll initiative predated the pandemic, and set the foundation for what followed.

Who wants to talk about something positive? 🙋🏼‍♀️

Tennessee’s #Reading360 training continues to get insanely-good feedback. 👀

When is the last time you heard these sorts of reviews of any training, no less a state training?

It’s the unicorn of professional learning. 🦄
This year, @TNedu is doing something truly pioneering, adding a Secondary Literacy Training for upper grade Eds, in addition to its well-reviewed Early Reading Training.

This is huge! Many kids get to secondary w/ reading struggles. Teachers need more support.

Details here:
So in its first week, Secondary Literacy Training got 100% positives from participants…

While Early Reading Training (for K-5 teachers) continues to get astoundingly-good feedback.

Just Wow, @TNedu @SchwinnTeach @lisacoons10 @JaredMyracle. 👏👏👏👏👏

Todd Collins @careads calls out @TonyThurmond for a weak literacy plan:

“the typical patchwork of spending and programs – library cards, free e-books, grants for dual language programs” that have failed to improve troubling literacy rates in CA schools.

edsource.org/2022/a-compreh…
Todd describes the “elements of a comprehensive plan,” and notes number of states taking action on literacy. He puts a particular spotlight on Mississippi.

In fact, @TNedu comes closest to @careads’s elements of comprehensive plan. @natwexler detailed:

forbes.com/sites/nataliew…
I love Mississippi’s work in teacher training. BUT… MS has not taken action to get high-quality curriculum into schools.

Only @TNedu has done both: #Reading360 Early Reading Training and now Secondary Literacy Training, AND high-quality curriculum in most schls.

Children not reading on grade level should never become normal.

From a retired superintendent:
Your daily reminder that only a third of US students are proficient in reading in 4th grade.

Worse yet, the figure doesn’t improve by 8th grade.

In this same period, US graduation rates have dramatically improved.

Schools just pass on & graduate kids that read poorly.
This is actually a prescient tweet about one of the biggest roots of the issue:

Mostly, there is a pervasive misunderstanding about how kids learn to read, and the best tactics for accelerating literacy rates.

People don’t know what they don’t know. Big barrier to change.

Signs of momentum for high-quality curriculum, which is tailor-built to align with reading research…

1. In Reading, MA

Notice learning journey detailed in this thread by @WiseForReading1.

Leaders in a district need to come up learning curve on how kids learn to read.
2. In Gwinnett County, outside Atlanta, GA:

Note the role of district leadership in leading this change. Also, the significant investment in teacher professional learning alongside the materials.

HT @SuptCalvinWatts @TNakiaT.
Reminder that the majority of districts contribute to use curriculum that does not align with research on how kids learn to read.

In MA, the market share of the bottom two curricula in the country (and knockoffs) is somewhere between 40% and 65%.

DC is offering structured literacy training to 80 teachers per year, w/ $1200 stipends.

“Great start, but it falls significantly short of what states like MS & TN have done to address a known problem w/ a known solution.” 👏

Every state should be offering structured literacy training to its teachers.

I mean, look at the feedback from #Reading360 in TN! 👏

@AllisterSBOE rightly notes NAEP success in MS following its training initiative.

Keep an eye on the new Secondary Literacy Training in Tennessee, @AllisterSBOE @brookepintodc @NYSEDNews @nyschoolboards @NYSchoolSupts.

It’s the next opportunity once K–5 teachers have been broadly supported with professional learning. 👏

“You can see it in our data.”

Last summer, @TNedu trained more than 10,000 elementary teachers in early reading foundations.

The trainings received mad-good reviews, with ~97% of educators saying it would affect how they taught reading. 👏

Fast forward three seasons:
Please take a minute to watch this video to see what “we see it in our data” means in another Tennessee district.

This kind of student progress wasn’t happening in @LebanonSSD before the @TNedu Early Reading Training. Now it is. 👏👏👏

Now, @TNedu is gearing up for another summer of Early Reading Training for elementary T’s.

AND they’re pioneering something we haven’t seen in any other state:

Literacy Training for teachers in secondary grades! I will be watching this closely to see teacher feedback.

Spent the day in @MilanElementary yesterday, and yet again found myself marveling at the quality of the student work in districts that use high-quality curriculum.

Second graders, y’all. 👏

“I am proud. I belong here.”

Students are writing first-person narratives from the point of view of Ruby Bridges or Sylvia Mendez, after reading about their experiences as school desegregation pioneers.

This approach, in which writing flows from the reading/study students have been doing in English Language Arts, is a hallmark of high-quality curriculum.

Here’s more about this unit of the curriculum (@WitWisdomELA), in a @BaltCitySchools parent guide.

You all see me point to Tennessee and @TNedu as the leading state for literacy work.

This is why!

Tennessee’s educators say it best. Hear about the impact of the #Reading360 investments from @PennyTh00680704 & @LebanonSSD team:
What Tennessee did differently:

They paired very strong Early Reading Training for teachers with an initiative to get all districts using high-quality curriculum.

That whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Many states are training teachers on the science of reading. Other states encourage use of high-quality curriculum.

TN standa out for pairing the two so effectively, and really, it's principals, teachers, district leaders saying so. @PennyTh00680704

Starting your day in a kindergarten is always good.

When the kinders are completely engaged in a strong phonics lesson, learning a new digraph, it’s AWESOME.

A peek into a lesson on the /ch/ digraph:
I’m visiting with the #KnowledgeMatters School Tour, one of my favorite initiatives in K-12.

The tour visits schools doing 💪 work with high-quality curriculum. This leg visits Tennessee schools using the free foundational skills curriculum developed by @TNedu.

More here:
It’s the first year with a strong systematic phonics program… but you wouldn’t know it!

We spotted sound walls the minute we walked in.

On my way to Tennessee, and SO EXCITED for this leg of the #KnowledgeMatters School Tour!

Did you know Tennessee created its own free, open source foundational skills curriculum for schools? #swoon

I see it in action tomorrow in @ElizCitySchools!
Tennessee is a standout leader in use of high-quality curriculum, and they’ve done much more to advance reading instruction under the #Reading360 initiative.

I’ll be there a few times for @TNedu Tennessee Literacy Month, and it’s truly an honor to see and share this work.
In the meantime, enjoy this phonics lesson from one of our previous trips to Tennessee, in @PCSSTN.

Every child deserves to learn “the code” of the English language, and this is how it’s done.

This is a really important piece by @natwexler.

First and foremost, it's the only reporting I've seen on a major achievement by @TNedu:

Almost all Tennessee districts now use high-quality curriculum! That's HUGE.

forbes.com/sites/nataliew…
Increasing use of high-quality curriculum is a longtime goal of many states. In fact, 13 states participate in @CCSSO's High-Quality Instructional Materials and Professional Development (IMPD) network, squarely focused on this goal.

TN is one of the 13...

And so far, it's the biggest success story, given this traction.

In 2019-20, I had a chance to visit six of the pioneers in this work with the #KnowledgeMatters School Tour, and the local leadership was abundant.

Here was one thread – it's long, but...+
