1/ Thread on the endemic nature of sexual assault & harassment in our society.

It's taken me a few days to muster the courage to share my personal experiences, but I feel strongly that women's voices need too be heard.

The full article is here: madeleinakay.com/endemic-sexual…
2/ When I was 14, I was attacked by a naked man on a beach in Norfolk. I had gone to the beach alone to do some sketching. He chased me down, threw me around & groped me. As I ran away he stood wanking himself, screaming “Fuck me, Bitch!”.
3/ When I was campaigning, an older male activist developed an obsession with me. At events he would greet me by grabbing both my arms & kissing me on the lips. He would follow me around everywhere and try to stand or sit as close to me as possible. He put his hands on my legs...

1/ The Parliamentary debate on #PolicingBill is a timely reminder that racist & authoritarian comments in the name of ‘law & order’ is a bottomless pit that MPs love to drink from. This isn’t new, & there are many lessons from the campaigns we ran in 1984 & 1994 that apply today.
2/ In 1994 the Tory Govt proposed a draconian bill that targeted the free party scene, environmental protestors, the traveller community, football fans, trade union rights, & the right to protest. We built a broad based alliance - uniting young ravers & black community activists
3/ The protests grew from 20,000 people to 100,000 over 3 marches culminating in the surreal battle of Hyde Park in October. Slogans in the campaign included #ReclaimTheStreets & #KillTheBill

@SRW_ANU @HonJulieBishop @MrKRudd @shiroarmstrong @SharonFrielOz .@HonJulieBishop thanks for an excellent panel on Geopolitical leadership in a post #covid world. We ran out of time before the gender & leadership question could be addressed.

@SRW_ANU @HonJulieBishop @MrKRudd @shiroarmstrong @SharonFrielOz 1/4 Where does gender and issues of women’s leadership feature in your vision for a forward-thinking Australian government in a Post-COVID geopolitical arrangement? #auspol #ReclaimTheseStreets #March4Justiceau #March4Justice
@SRW_ANU @HonJulieBishop @MrKRudd @shiroarmstrong @SharonFrielOz 2/4 Could you reflect on the institutionalized misogyny and ‘boys club’ attitudes that have led to the current sexual abuse allegations; and the inability to take women’s safety seriously even within government offices. #auspol #March4Justice #ReclaimTheseStreets

On Monday Priti Patel wants to rush through a bill in the Commons which will lower the point at which police can intervene. After the appalling police reaction last night at #ReclaimTheStreets #SarahEverard peaceful vigil, we should be extremely concerned theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
But this is not just about #metpolice powers (altho' we need more checks and balances on these). This is about govt wanting to silence "protests". Last yr #PritiPatel branded #BlackLivesMatter protests "dreadful" and called Extinction Rebellion “eco-crusaders turned criminals”
There are many extra powers for police regarding protests, as well as more infringement on human rights which should cause concern in tmrw's Police, Crime Sentencing and Courts Bill. This includes increasing maximum penalty for damage to memorials to 10yrs bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…

We are tired of being ignored.
We are tired of being belittled.
We are tired of being assaulted.
We are tired of being raped.
We are tired of being murdered.

But most of all we are tired of our leaders allowing this to happen.
Get that vaccine rolled out because we need to #ReclaimTheStreets 🤬
It had better make every front page.

I am shaking with rage.

I can understand why the Met couldn't openly facilitate the #ReclaimTheStreets vigil for Sarah Everard ahead of time for consistency, given its stance on other recent demonstrations

But its response tonight was a choice, and an inflammatory one
It also undermines arguments about proportionality and the aim of the Health Protection Regulations

Their legislative foundation is as an emergency health protection measure to reduce the spread of coronavirus, illness and death. Stopping gatherings is part of that
But if there is a gathering which is distanced, masked and following government guidance, police operations that bring people into closer contact creates more risk

Arresting people and taking them into custody creates more contact between people in closed spaces

Warning long tweet ahead Image
I once knew a woman who was married to a police officer. They separated, after years of mental abuse, she left with their young children, moving into rented accommodation. And he stalked her. She never knew until he told her.
He showed her exactly where he could stand without being seen, to look into her kitchen windows. He showed her where he could park to monitor who went into and out of her property. He was convinced she was having an affair. Which, of course, she wasn’t.

Thread: To all the women scared to #ReclaimTheseStreets as a result of police intimidation around £10k fines for covid-safe vigils. This is just the beginning... @pritipatel’s new Police & Crime Bill introduced this week will criminalise nearly all forms of effective protest..
They want to enshrine the limitations on civil liberties that we’ve seen under the pandemic in law and restrict the ways we can legally protest going forward. Noone knows about this bill yet you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/prot…
Read more here and do everything you can to spread the word. Or this will become the new law of the land under the radar and we’ll wake up one day soon having lost our right to protest theguardian.com/law/2021/mar/1…
