On this, the 73rd day of #ecmo support for Covid, this young #pedsicu patient was decannulated. The work it took by the team & by him to survive these 73 days was inspirational & emotional. We’re so proud of him. His journey below in🧵 Shared w/ permission from his devoted mom 💪🏻
Part of his physical therapy and treatment plan for Covid was to prone on ecmo. He was our first @ChildrensMercy patient to do this on #ecmo. We developed hand signals so he could control the process every time. #rehablegend Image
We helped his mental health with a visit from his 🐶 which is a new #childlife intervention we are doing in the #pedsicu ❤️ @jswallisch @emacksc @DrRissman @LifeandPICU Image

@SapnaKmd @karen_choong @drpetaalexander @drgregkelly @rch @PICU_Up @mch_childrens Can we stop children dying without giving them new problems?

Alongside gains in #pedsICU survival is parallel ⤴ in kids who leave w functional limitation– may affect life forever

Some related to illness but some related to what we do– or don’t do

@SapnaKmd @karen_choong @drpetaalexander @drgregkelly @rch @PICU_Up @mch_childrens #pedsICU has 2 distinct pops:

1.Kids who come in, get better & go. Teams, thoughts, training structured for these minority of bed days
2.Kids who stay > 1 wk – majority of bed days but systems ignore

A New Year’s Day plea on behalf of all the UKs Therapists who want to help rebuild our nation from this tragic pandemic

We need investment across the pathway - we haven’t seen a penny

#LongCOVID clinics are a start but no where near enough 1/6
We have the skills and ability to care for people with complex rehabilitation needs

We work in multi-disciplinary teams, autonomously and in professional groups from intensive care to community

There isn’t a space in health and social care that you won’t find us 2/6
Yet still we suffer from lack of any serious investment. Often being the after thought to business cases, and being expected to do more with less

We have yet to see serious commitment to rehabilitation pathways & if it can’t come now, during a global pandemic, when will it? 3/6

🎈Derecruitment often with repositioning = big ⬇️ SpO2 - preoxygenate & have dr nearby for vent recruitment is helpful. Once repositioned often need time to settle again (can be a 15 min nervous wait!)
