HAPPENING NOW: @rweingarten joins @Axios on @HBOMax to discuss school reopenings and more. Follow along with the hashtag #ReopenSafely!
.@rweingarten: Teachers, more than anyone but kids' parents, understand what has been lost by not having in-school learning. It's not just the issues around not having enough WiFi. It's the lack of interaction. It's the loneliness. Screens have replaced communities. #ReopenSafely
.@rweingarten: I believe a majority of K-8 schools will be open. Because of physical distancing & mitigation strategies, a lot of these schools were overcrowded to begin with. So will they be open 5 days a week? I hope so. Our members are in favor of this goal. #ReopenSafely

@rweingarten joins @MeetThePress to discuss President Biden's plans to reopen schools, #COVID19 vaccinations, and more. Follow along here with the hashtag #ReopenSafely.
.@rweingarten: I want to dispel this myth that teacher unions want to keep schools closed. Teachers know how important in-person learning is important. I think we have a roadmap to #ReopenSafely, and with Biden's #AmericanRescuePlan, we'll have the resources.
.@rweingarten: It comes down to 3 things: Mitigation factors, testing for asymptomatic spread, and vaccination alignment with reopening of schools. #ReopenSafely

HAPPENING NOW: @rweingarten talks to @CNN about the Biden school reopening plan, vaccinations, and more. #ReopenSafely
.@rweingarten: Dr. Walensky & the CDC put out safety guidance we asked the Trump administration for months ago. Teachers know in-person instruction is best. We need the guidance to curb #COVID19 & resources to do it. The Biden administration has been a sea change. #ReopenSafely
.@rweingarten: If you're social distancing, you need 30% more space & 30% more educators. The reason so many places are in hybrid is because they don't have the space or the educators. #ReopenSafely

.@rweingarten: I think it's feasible to meet @POTUS's reopening goal. I think there's some confusion about 5 day a week meaning that everyone is back to normal in April, May, June. You need to have 30% more space & educators to do that, per CDC guidelines. #ReopenSafely
.@rweingarten: The good news is, unlike the last administration where we begged for guidance & resources, we have the Biden administration's CDC putting out science-based guidance & the #AmericanRescuePlan with much-needed resources. actionnetwork.org/letters/pass-t…

We have always been able to depend on @AFTWV to fight for the future #WVChildrenDeserve. And while we will face challenges over the next few months, I know that by working together, we’ll prevail in the long term.
Right now, WV GOP lawmakers are working to continue the DeVos legacy of undermining public schools using charter schools, vouchers, union busting, and more. But we cannot lose hope and we cannot give up. #WVChildrenDeserve better.
We may not have the leadership we hoped for in WV, but we have an opportunity w/. @JoeBiden to secure more resources for public education and #ReopenSafely to get people back into the classroom, & to pass #COVID19 relief with the #AmericanRescuePlanactionnetwork.org/letters/worker…

Thank you @CNN for having me on this morning to talk about school reopenings, #COVID19, vaccinations, and what we’ll need to #ReopenSafely.
Educators turned on a dime to make remote learning work, but we all want to be back in the classrooms. It’s why we’ve been working since April 2020 to #ReopenSafely.  aft.org/reopen-schools
Aligning vaccinations for educators in school buildings that are reopening and who want them and are is an important part of the reopening process, as NYC & Cleveland have shown. It’s what we’re working on elsewhere too.

The decision on #ReopeningSchools has fallen largely on local school districts and university administrators. So how can it be done safely as #COVID19 surges?

@margbrennan spoke with @AmericanU President and former @HHSGov Sec. @SylviaBurwell for more:

How did @SylviaBurwell decide to take @AmericanU totally online amid #coronavirus concerns?

She tells @margbrennan "after consulting a lot of epidemiologists" and local officials, she made the "best decision' to change course this fall #ReopenSafely

#COVID19 is just going to bring "health care issues more to the forefront" she says

.@AFTPa_Pres: "Given the severity of this virus, AFT Pa does not believe schools can safely reopen unless there is a sustained consistent downward trajectory of cases as demonstrated by three community health gate keeping benchmarks:
First, 50 cases per 100,000 of population over a fourteen-day period. This is necessary to document that the total numbers of those diagnosed with COVID-19 are in decline.
Next, the positivity rate must be less than or equal to five percent over the most recent 14-day period.

I spent a couple of hours in my classroom yesterday attending an online class after an informal on-site meeting. It really is where I love to be. I want to be excited to be prepping my room for a new school year. 1/7
Instead, I’m worried. Our meeting was to try to fit together all the moving parts of in-person learning and safety. It felt like being handed two puzzles and asked to make one puzzle out of all the pieces from both. 2/7
It’s...a lot. Even in our small building there are challenges that feel insurmountable. We are expected to open full time, everyone in the building every day. We will do everything possible to keep everyone safe... 3/7

Covid Act Now is releasing new modeling for 3 metrics critical to help America Reopen *Safely.*

📈COVID Case Growth
🧪Testing Capacity
🏥ICU Safety Margin

#ReopenSafely #CovidActNow #StayHome
Crucial Reopen Metric #1 = *Case Growth*

In order for a state to reopen safely, the number of #COVID cases should be decreasing.

That means the R-effective has to be less than 1.0
Crucial Reopen Metric #2 = *Testing Capacity*

In order for a state to reopen safely, we must test a sufficient % of the population.

➡️High % of ➕ tests = likely not testing very many people.
➡️Low % of ➕ tests = likely testing a wide swath of the population.
