This is a thread about my journey to oppose the initiative to "clarify" the Equality Act 2010 by adding "biological" in front of "sex":
When I first heard about this, circa October last year, my first thought was that it seemed like a good idea. I welcomed the initiative, signed the petition, promoted it, both on twitter and during interviews about my book 'Born in the Right Body'.
I had always been a #RepealTheGRA supporter, ever since I learned of the GRA2004 legislation. I read it, pondered on it extensively, analysed it and the Equality Act. I'm not a lawyer, but I am a doctor and I needed to understand why women have lost single sex provisions.

Apparently, anyone who wishes to uphold the integrity of woman as a sex-based political class is a fundamentalist and purist. The idea that woman is categorised by her sex rather than ‘identity’ is the new extremist position to take. Women who advocate such an audacious…1.

🧵It's all the speeches this lot didn't want you to hear from the @StandingforXX #LetWomenSpeak rally yesterday at #SpeakersCorner Hyde Park! Huge thanks to @roseveniceallan and @ThePosieParker who was much missed.

Thread will grow as I get through them! Subtitles coming later!
First up we had @RachelK01840150 with this barnstorming speech about the unpopularity of women who made historic gains for women's rights! 🔥

Charlotte Edwards, @rafaellacjthis, gave this short address against the medicalisation of gender non conformity.👏👏

I was on an Irish Penal Reform Trust @IPRT webinar last year when they launched their report on Irish prisons. I raised BK + the other 2 men in Limerick women’s prison, the solitary confinement issue, the Mandela Rules. I was told “That’s outside the scope of our report.” #KPSS
Could whoever’s briefing @LeoVaradkar pls point out legal experts have been saying for years the GRA has put the State in an impossible position; not just about prisons, but closed psych wards, hospital wards, schools etc; Irish gov have statutory responsibility for safeguarding.
You can have “gender identity” in law (hiding sex/falsifying records) OR safeguarding, but not both. There’s no “privacy right” to hide sex (+ criminal background; see @NoXYinXXprisons report), only a dangerous privilege. Governments MUST #RepealTheGRA + all sex falsification.

‘Transgenderism’ seeks to unmoor us from the reality of our sexed bodies, which for women results in the complete denial of what the female body experiences and is subjected to with regards male violence. As @KnownHeretic states, ‘it preaches disassociation from primary sense…

Apparently, the characteristic of GR is defined below. It’s a sex ‘reassignment’ process that involves physiological or other aspects of sex change. This process can be started with a mere thought - I think, therefore, I am. Or with the physical mimicry of gender stereotypes. 1.
Gender itself, is not defined but we all know it to be imposed behaviour/expectations placed on both sexes. In effect, GR applies to those who believe/wish they are/were the opposite sex. It is a characteristic based on belief, not fact. S7 describes the manifestation of…2.
that belief in a physical and metaphysical manner. It conflates sex with gender without ever explaining gender. We are just to accept that ‘transsexuals’ are people who are capable of sex change/reassignment. If that is not considered a belief then it must be a blatant lie…3.

We want to remove “gender reassignment” from the Equality Act because, under it, an autogynephilic man successfully argued he had a right to override the limited consent for women’s intimate care being only female

In other words, his perversion & predation were protected acts
How unfortunate

Our analysis that existing protected characteristics cover people in genuine need of discrimination protection sounds simple because it cuts through the gender fog.

Is it even ethical to be discussing amendments to the GRA, knowing it blatantly renders women politically powerless and is the antithesis of child-safeguarding? Those drafting the act knew it would affect women’s sex-based rights: from sex-discrimination/equality law, privacy…1

Is it a level of moral bankruptcy to attempt to mitigate and compromise on a piece of legislation…2.

🧵 Since writing about my experience of psych hospital the women who’ve told me their stories proves these places aren’t safe for women. Women at their most vulnerable with no escape, with various other issues & often have male induced trauma. As a result of our experiences.. 1/6
We don’t trust authority or those who are meant to care if we need support or are in a crisis. Me & other women purposely avoid asking for help or tellingly told by medical professionals that psych facilities are best avoided even when very unwell. 2/6
Avoiding these places is not always possible. Women, who can be as young as 18 like I was require a safe single sex environment to get better/learn to manage. Where they aren’t in high alert 24/7. That feeling never leaves & nor does the genuine trauma of being inside. 3/6

Women asking orgs and individuals whether they support #RepealTheGRA isn't a purity test (like some people engaged in purity spirals for years now claim). It's a good faith question so that we can:
1. Start the conversation
2. Decide who to support with our money and resources
There are many myths around repealling the GRA that are generated by people who don't want it repealed, including that "repealling would mean leaving EHCR". This is untrue. There are 46 countries in EHCR and not all of them have GRA-type laws.
GRA2004 is obsolete now. It was brought in when same-sex marriage was illegal, to allow "transsexuals" to marry same sex partners. Same sex marriage is now legal. Equality Act 2010 protects people who underwent, or plan to undergo gender reassignment, from discrimination.

Thread on some international law stuff.
One of the arguments from those who oppose #RepealTheGRA is that the GRA 2004 caters to a tiny minority of the population and is finely balanced.
Now let's step way back in time. Following the end of WWII, a process of decolonisation started. The economic implications of that process are relevant here. Newly independent countries wanted to nationalise the economic resources of their own land. Sovereignty included resources
Western countries claimed they had acquired those resources legally and at the very least deserved full compensation for those nationalisations, which were a form of expropriation. The battle played out as much at the United Nations General Assembly as outside.

Limp response to #RepealTheGRA petition from @CabinetOffice

The 2004 Act is "effective," "balanced" and grants individuals their "wish," so women & children - the majority - just have to tolerate deprivation of safety, privacy & dignity.

The 2020 position, following Stonewall's GRA reform/"self-ID" push, is no longer current. How can @cabinetofficeuk not have moved on in response to events, including @scotgov debacle? The voting public knows gender laws are absurd & harmful. Debate must happen #RepealTheGRA
And if @RishiSunak doesn't clean up the gender mess on his watch, it'll just become a replay of the "Tory sleaze" saga. Reality matters!

Scottish parliament just voted 59 to 64 against an amendment that would have prevented registered sex offenders from being able to #SelfID under the proposed #GRRBill.

No democratic mandate whatsoever for any of this...

Shouts of *shame on all of you* from the gallery! 💪
"TherEs nO conNNecTioN beTweEn the TwaNs C0mUniTY aNd $eX oFfendErs!" we hear, over and over again, ignoring the anecdotes and evidence to the contrary, with varying degrees of credulity.

Why vote to make sure they can get a GRC then? WHY?

[🧵] Since #TransWomenAreConMen is trending, here's a relevant anecdote that I found while researching for a video.

In this court case from 2018, an applicant for a gender recognition certificate appealed against the panel's multiple decisions to reject their application.👇
bailii.org/cgi-bin/format…

The whole thing makes *VERY* informative and enraging reading, but here are some highlights.... /
/ The applicant, Jay, was a trans identifying male prisoner, divorced from his third marriage, who had been convicted of "obtaining explosives with *intent to endanger life*" 😬😬😬

"Who's life?" seems like a pertinent question? Sadly I don't have that info.... / Image

There really is no way forward but to #RepealTheGRA.

This is a definitive clash between Gender Reassignment otoh, and Sex, Sexuality & Belief oto.

GR, without the practical enforcement of its legal certificate, is little more than personality expressed via gender stereotypes.
But because in reality it’s a psychological condition, it’s inescapably locked into escalation.

I feel like a man (euphoria)
I look like a man (validation)
I’m treated as a man (confirmation)
Treat me like a man (inclusion)
See me as a man (imposition)
Say I’m a man (control)
This escalation set it on a fixed course from its beginning,
to override the Protected Characteristics that would otherwise undermine it.

Sex renders GR a fiction.
Sexuality reveals it as constructed, not innate.
Belief denies it outright.

This is protected by law.

Recently, I have been working with some intelligent women who knew that to get repeal of the Gender Recognition Act the timing and the wording of such a campaign was key. 🧵
At the heart of this initiative was a desire to take a niche cause and make it a universal one with mass appeal. A clever approach was needed and it would take time and care to construct it. Time, it turns out, that we did not have.
We had hoped to make progress while attention was diverted to the laudable petition from @SexMattersOrg to get a quick fix to better define the sexes (sign it if you have not done so, yet).

An unjust authority removes property from its rightful owner, and gifts it to an undeserving thief who covets it.

Then a law is passed, declaring the stolen property now belongs to both the interloper AND the rightful owner.

The rightful owner objects.
People then suggest that the rightful owner must be punished for failing to recognise the interloper & thief as a rightful owner of their stolen property.

There is no recourse for the rightful owner to reclaim what is rightfully theirs, or deny the validity of the thief's claim.
The rightful owner is punished more harshly for the 'crime' of reporting the theft & refusing to recognise the validity of the 'new owner' than the thief is for laying claim to stolen property. The thief garners public sympathy as the purported victim of the rightful owner's ire.
