For over a quarter of a century, terms such as “#reproductiverights” and “sexual and #reproductivehealth” have appeared in dozens—perhaps hundreds—of UN resolutions, despite remaining controversial due to their inextricable linkage to the issue of abortion.
In recent years, another term, “#reproductivejustice,” has started to appear, not in negotiated resolutions, but in reports generated by UN agencies like the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). c-fam.org/definitions/wh… via @FridayFax
"minority women in the U.S., particularly those who are poor, have historically been targeted by eugenics advocates, through forced sterilizations or... through the aggressive promotion of long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods, some with serious health risks."

We are so PUMPED to be back at House Judiciary committee to hear HB23-1187 Alternative Sentencing for Pregnant People #copolitics

HB23-1187 will ensure that #pregnant people have the opportunity to #alternative sentencing 🔥

@S2SSisters @elephant_circle
We know that pregnancy is contraindicated towards a #healthy pregnancy & being incarcerated while pregnant is harmful to both the pregnant person and the child - #reproductivejustice is what we are fighting for today #copolitics @elephant_circle @S2SSisters
Correctional facilities are not mandated to track or report pregnancy-related data & most facilities do not have any routine process for collecting such information - another reason why we are saying YES on HB23-1187 #copolitics #leadership #reproductivehealth

Been following the news about the relocation Louise Dean Centre and the alumni and students organizing (@LdcYyc) to keep a distinct space for pregnant and parenting teens in #yyc Let’s explore the hist of the program and why it is STILL important to #reproductivejustice 🧵
1/
The program will be moved away from a space where pregnant and parenting teens can go to school alongside an elementary school and childcare facility – and where childcare and edu for their own children was offered. Instead, the program is to move to another local high school
2/
Along with worries re. childcare, LDC alumni, students are concerned about the bullying and stigma from other students not in the program. Some, who have exited abusive relationships, worry about safety w the new potential of going to school with their ex or friends of the ex

Today we affirm our solidarity with all people working for #ReproductiveJustice. Whether it is a right to an abortion, the right to affirming medical care, or the right to learn about your own history in schools, our rights to self-determination and bodily autonomy are entwined.
There will be an inevitable rush to consider what today's #SCOTUS opinion means for other legal precedents but this is a time to pledge our solidarity and shared community with all people who seek to end pregnancies and to acknowledge the impact of this opinion on all our lives.
As state legislatures and the courts aim to put our communities in harm's way we know where to look for leadership and vision – to the networks of community support, organizations, and people committed to protecting bodily autonomy that have anticipated and met this moment.

Okay, listening into the #RHEA the Reproductive Health Equity Act testimony, and listening to folks that haven’t given birth or could have opinions about #reproductivehealth is just always disappointing and unnecessary.
This guy on this panel basically said “why does birth need to constitute a human right”, um, sir, what in the what? LIVING HUMANS don’t have human rights yet.
All this commentary coming to you is really actually inspired by @Justa_Jus ‘s incredible commentary 🤣

This #InternationalWomensDay2022 let’s revisit the progressive judgments of the Indian Courts reaffirming the rights of the women and providing them better protection of the law.

#ICLU celebrates 21 judgments of the #SupremeCourt on this #WomensDay
1. The Apex Court providing for detailed guidelines for safety of women at workplace in Vishakha & Ors. v. State of Rajasthan & Ors. (1997) directed employers to provide a mechanism for redressal of grievances of employees. (1/2)
These guidelines were eventually formalised as legislation with the passing of the Sexual Harrasment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013. (2/2)

1. RJNB is pleased with the government's decision to fund this research project.
We agree that this funding does not solve the systemic issues that forced #SaveClinic554 to close most of its services...
cbc.ca/news/canada/ne…
2. ...and we are frustrated that we, and many others, have poured countless hours of protest & advocacy into trying to move the provincial government to #Axe8420 and #FundClinicAbortions.
3. The federal grant will not fund the medical services that #Clinic554 provided. But it provides funding to properly research & document abortion barriers in New Brunswick, a province that stubbornly clings to a practice of state misogyny, not least by restricting abortion.

#reproethicsconf2021 keynote @DorothyERoberts
It is absolutely realistic to predict that women will be prosecuted and imprisoned for having abortions. It has!!

Harmful policies, happening in the US today, we need collective movements to support reproductive rights.

Policies based on harmful ideologies that aim to “solve social problems”...targeting “at-risk” meaning Black, Latinx, poor communities

You may know the name J.M Sims as the 'father of gynaecology' but do you know Anarcha Westcott? Anarcha was an enslaved 17-year-old girl that endured 30 experimental surgeries, without anaesthetic or her consent. Her ordeal became Sims' legacy. (Thread) #BlackHistoryMonth Illustration of Dr. J. Marion Sims with Anarcha by Robert Th
In 1845 Anarcha suffered vesicovaginal and rectovaginal fistulas after labouring for three days. We don't know if this was her first pregnancy or if she went on to have other children, but the child died in labour and Anarcha was left with life-threatening grievous injuries. Women paint their bodies in red as they take part in protest
Her captors were not interested in her wellbeing. Rickets and vitamin D deficiency brought on by prolonged malnutrition had deformed her pelvic bone which was part of the cause of her condition. They called Sims in to ensure their propriety would continue to breed more slaves. J. Marion Sims

Did you know?
Prof. Loretta J.Ross and the Women of African Descent for Reproductive Justice coined the term #ReproductiveJustice? Black feminists working within and outside the pro-choice movement in the United States coined the term “reproductive justice” in 1994. Image
Grounded in intersectional feminism, reproductive justice has evolved into a platform for articulating the full
spectrum of reproductive and sexual human rights.

They defined #ReproductiveJustice as: A movement-building and organising framework that identifies how reproductive oppression is the result of the intersection of multiple oppressions and is inherently connected to the struggle for social justice and human rights.

1/ During the final session of the 2020 Religion News Association Annual Conference, I made this statement. What follows is my statement on the #abortion debate. #rna2020virtual Image
2/ Whoever builds the house sets parameters for possiblities within. Burned by gains of #CivilRights, seething from Supreme Court anti-segregation ruling (Bob Jones vs USA), southern White men constructed #abortion debate framework in 1983 as staging ground for cultural warfare.
3/ Pro-life vs Pro-choice is an inhuman frame, meant to draw battle lines, meant to set the stage for winners/losers. It is so last-century. And it is inaccurate. Those who built the pro-life frame have proven beyond a shadow of doubt, what they really cared about is white life.
