Dear @eucopresident,
An extension is welcome so we can avoid no deal. But I ask you again to take people out of this now. After 1021 days of living in limbo, five million EU and British citizens cannot continue to live like this. Ring-fence the citizens' rights agreement now. 1/
Given how populists throughout the EU are seeking to undermine what the EU stands for, it is incomprehensible to me why EU leaders are so willing to keep people's lives part of the negotiations. Do you not see that that gives the populists a win? 2/
Many EU leaders tweet about the values of EU citizenship yet are choosing to keep 5m people who built their lives on it by exercising FoM in limbo. That ongoing limbo is unacceptable. There is still time to change this, and I implore EU leaders to do so. #RescueOurRights 3/3

"As a German migrant and a scientist, freedom of movement has shaped my professional and personal life over the past 20 years, it defines who I am and what I stand for. Brexit is the exact opposite of this."

"The Leave campaigns assured the 3million EU citizens in the UK and the more than 1 million Britons in Europe that Brexit would not affect them, and both UK government and EU stressed on numerous occasions that guaranteeing our rights would be one of their top priorities.

17 days until everything in the lives of 3.6 million EU citizens in the UK changes and you suggest we read some Q&A. I’m sorry @EUlondonrep, but this simply is not good enough. EU leaders have to ask themselves what role they now wish to play: help us #RescueOurRights, or 1/
choose not to do so. If they choose the latter that would have dire consequences not just for us EU citizens (and our British friends in an EU country), but for the very foundations of the EU: we, the people who chose to exercise FoM, basicllay *live* the EU every day. 2/
If the EU considers, as we have heard from some, the protection of our rights “cherry-picking”, then it is now a valid question to ask what the EU is actually about. I believe strongly in its ideals. But if even I ask that now, where do you think this will end? 3/3

Lieber @RegSprecher,
Lieber @HeikoMaas,
PS: This was a call for responsibility I added to my lecture at the Karlsruher Gespräche. You can watch the whole lecture here -- it is actually mostly in English:

Today is #MotherLanguageDay. Many people and organisations are celebrating the beauty of diverse languages. For EU citizens at home in the UK #Brexit only comes in a universal language: that of anxiety. Anxiety because we all have to apply to stay in our home.
#RescueOurRights
Ring-fencing our rights would help take away some of that anxiety. So today we call on the countries of our mother language, @10DowningStreet, @Europarl_EN, @EU_Commission, @MichelBarnier, @eucopresident, @EP_President and @guyverhofstadt to finally do that! 2/
If you want to help EU citizens at home in the UK then please become an #EUcitizensChampion

.@margotwallstrom I think your comments here are spot on. But for the EU there now is a question too: what future can it have if leaders are prepared to sacrifice the rights of those 5 million people who live the EU through freedom of movement and are 1/ politico.eu/article/brexit…
now most immediately affected by Brexit? EU citizens in the UK and British citizens in the EU — their rights are not guaranteed. Stories of anxiety, insomnia and suicidal thoughts increase in number daily. If the EU cares about the ideals it was founded on then leaders 2/
have the duty to do the right thing and ring-fence #citizensrights now. @margotwallstrom: will you help @the3million & @BritishInEurope to #RescueOurRights? 3/3

1/ Today @EU_Commission has released more detail on no-deal Brexit implications and plans to mitigate impact on EU citizens. There is some moderately good news on social security coordination (especially pensions) europa.eu/rapid/press-re…
2/ eg. pension years earned in the UK prior to exit day will still count towards pension received in other EU27 should the EU citizens leave the UK. This will be a relief to many EU citizens who have left the UK already or are planning to do so in the near future.
3/ It does not replace though continued social security coordination as agreed in the #citizensrights part of the EU/UK Withdrawal Agreement. Years worked after Brexit day in case of a no deal Brexit will not count towards state pensions in other EU27 states later in life.

Tonight the majority of MPs voted in support of #ImmigrationBill. If it goes ahead without amendments, it will strip 3.6m EU citizens like me of our existing rights protections *without* ensuring we retain human rights protection in legislation. #OurRightsAreNotForStripping 1/
I have no words for this. I really don't.
I have no words for the role the majority of @UKLabour played in this today either. 2/
Here is why the #ImmigrationBill is so dangerous for EU citizens. Please help us lobby MPs to support the amendments proposed by @HumanRightsCtte. Help us to #RescueOurRights as #OurRightsAreNotForStripping. 3/3

From tomorrow the #SettledStatus scheme will be open for all EU citizens at home in the UK. It forces us to apply to stay. To apply so we can remain your colleagues, friends, lovers and family. That is why now is the time for you to say: #HandsOff! Please help #RescueOurRights 1/
Tomorrow will mark a watershed with the general opening of the scheme. It will be a difficult day for EU citizens. So please keep sharing who you are standing with, who you want the UK Govt to keep their #HandsOff. Stories with photos/videos welcome. 2/
To learn more about the #HandsOff campaign - part of @eucitizenschamp - read this article; it includes some of the beautiful stories already shared and a little more on some of those who appear in the campaign video. metro.co.uk/2019/01/17/eu-… 3/

On Monday #SettledStatus will open for all of us @the3million in the UK (well, those who have a newer Android phone). It’s still a “test phase”, testing the system that will be used to force all of us to apply to pay to stay. The system is nothing like what we were promised. 1/
The system also does not allow us to live our lives as before even though @theresa_may has been telling us that all this time. 2/
She wasn’t on her own. Here is @BorisJohnson also stating clearly that rights will be protected “whatever happens”. That is not true. No-deal poses a serious threat and could mean that 3.6 million people, people like me, have no immigration status overnight. 3/

Some people have asked me what #HandsOff is all about. It is part of my @eucitizenschamp campaign. I founded this campaign in the summer of 2018 to support @the3million, the leading NGO working to protect the rights of EU citizens at home in the UK. 1/
If you would like to learn more about why that work this is so important now, listen to @antoni_UK's interview from this morning where he talks about the impact of Brexit, settled status, and why we need to #RescueOurRights. 2/
To learn a bit more about #HandsOff specifically, you can also listen to this week's @CakeWatchCast where I got a chance to talk about it, and the amazing work of @the3million and what we think about the recent attack on them, with @ottocrat. cakewatch.fireside.fm/38 3/

It's been absolutely amazing to see the reaction to the #HandsOff campaign today; to read the many beautiful stories about why Britons want to stand with us EU citizens to help us #RescueOurRights. I am so happy @MetroUK picked this up! metro.co.uk/2019/01/17/eu-… 1/
#HandsOff is part of my #EUcitizensChampion campaign, set up in support of @the3million. Today they achieved something brilliant and this shows exactly why we need to continue to enable them to keep doing this work: it does make a real difference. 2/
A real difference to the lives of millions. So help me make sure @the3million can continue their work. Help me make sure that the UK government keeps their #HandsOff EU citizens and that nobody is left behind, by making a donation to the campaign here: gofundme.com/eucitizenscham… 3/3

SUCCESS: about 30 minutes ago the judge at the Royal Court of Justice granted permission to progress with the case against the Govt's immigration exemption in the Data Protection Act.
The judge said that the case has merit to be heard and that both sides argued with force.
We would like to thank @LeighDay_Law for putting together such strong arguments for the case brought by us together with the @OpenRightsGroup

EU citizens are your colleagues, neighbours, friends and family. Your doctors, builders, teachers and hairdressers. As the UK descends further and further into chaos, we need you to stand with EU citizens. We need you to say: #HandsOff and support us to #RescueOurRights. 1/
#HandsOff is the new campaign drive for the #EUcitizensChampion campaign. Please support it with your own stories of who you're standing with and for who you're saying #HandsOff on our social media campaign day tomorrow, 17 January 2019. 2/
And please continue to support @eucitizenschamp. All donations made go directly, and in full, to @the3million so they can continue to make sure that no EU citizen is left behind because of Brexit. Thank you ❤️ gofundme.com/eucitizenscham… 3/

Did you vote Leave?
Are you just tired of the permanent fight between Leave & Remain? Well here is a #Brexit topic both Leavers & Remainers can unite & agree on: the #citizensrights of EU citizens who have made their home in the UK.

1/
No one voted to take away #citizensrights from EU citizens already living in the UK.
No one voted to put 3m EU citizens through almost 1,000 days of uncertainty over their status in the country they made their home.
No one voted to punish their EU neighbours & colleagues.

2/
Whether people voted Leave or Remain they voted in the knowledge of the Vote Leave promise to EU citizens:
- no change for EU citizens
- a new automatic status
- treated no less favourably than at present

1/ We are asking you @DExEUgov & @WalkerWorcester why are you misleading the electorate?
It is not a #citizensrights guarantee for the 3.6m EU citizens in the UK but barely a promise of lesser rights
2/ As @Stuart_McDonald pointed out in the House of Commons in December:
1) it is not a #citizensrights guarantee - but a promise. "Here today, gone tomorrow"
2) the Govt promise on #citizensrights for EU citizens does not match what was agreed in the Withdrawal Agreement. Why?
3/ and your promise is of no help to the 1.2m @BritishInEurope as @Stuart_McDonald rightly also points out

While the UK Govt refuses to secure the #citizensrights of EU citizens in the UK & @BritishInEurope through a bilateral ring-fencing agreement with the EU for the case of #NoDealBrexit they just showed that they are willing to do so with Switzerland.
europestreet.news/uk-switzerland…
The agreement with Switzerland does not only cover indefinite residence rights but also social security coordination, sevices provided & recognition of qualifications - things at risk for EU citizens in the UK & @BritishInEurope in case of no-deal Brexit.
ejpd.admin.ch/ejpd/en/home/a…
We are asking @DExEUgov & @Number10gov why is ring-fencing #citizensrights possible with Switzerland when you are refusing so hard to do so for the 3.6m EU citizens in the UK & 1.2m @BritishInEurope with the EU? People's lives are still used as #BargainingChip.

1/ With 2018 drawing to an end we are looking back at a year with many ups and some downs.
2/ In March 2018 the #citizensrights part of the Withdrawal Agreement was finalised.

Though not optimal, especially for our friends the @BritishInEurope who will lose onward movement, for the first time since the referendum EU citizens in the UK had some form of certainty.
3/ Towards the end of 2018 the threat of #NoDealBrexit was growing though. The #citizensrights certainty provided by the Withdrawal Agreement slipping away slowly. Replaced by ‘unilateral promises’ of fewer rights with lesser future protection.

1/ Dear @EU_Commission, your refusal to ring-fence the #citizensrights already agreed in the Withdrawal Agreement is undermining the principle of Freedom of Movement. No one can ever fully rely on FoM again to build their lives in any of the remaining EU27 states #RescueOurRights
2/ 5 million brave people have made the 28 countries of the EU their home away from home. 3.6m EU citizens in the UK & 1.2m @BritishInEurope have done so in good faith, truly showing the European spirit you encouraged us to live.
3/ Your refusal to even engage in thinking about ring-fencing and instead advocating 28 unilateral guarantees of differing rights, with a wide scope of interpretation which will lead to unavoidable divergence is a blow to us.

Today has been a very bad day for #The5Million. I had prepared myself for defending #FreedomOfMovement against @theresa_may. Turns out I should also have prepared myself for defending it against @HackneyAbbott who chose to pit EU citizens against other immigrants today. 1/
Earlier today I tweeted that I consider doing this - pit people against people -the lowest of the low. I expected it from @theresa_may and @sajidjavid, but I did not see coming that @HackneyAbbott would choose to do so too. This is always wrong, but especially in this case. 2/
Because:
1) It neglects the fact that freedom of movement is a *reciprocal* right, not preferential access, not a one-way street into the UK.
2) It is in the UK Govt's choice to treat immigrants from elsewhere in the way they are being treated - that is not a result of FoM. 3/

1/ Stellar statement by @Stuart_McDonald in the House of Commons on #InternationalMigrantsDay. Acknowledging the contribution migrants make to the UK and calling on the government to finally end the uncertainty over #citizensrights for EU citizens in the UK & @BritishInEurope
2/ "Prime Minister might just be able to salvage one thing meaningful from the ongoing talks in Brussels [...] she should seek to ring-fence the agreement on #citizensrights so that even in a dooms day scenario of no-deal those rights would be protected" @Stuart_McDonald says
3/ "It's worth trying [to ring-fence #citizensrights] because not trying means all the 3 million have to rely on is unilateral promise [...] and @BritishInEurope risk losing rights" @Stuart_McDonald continues on the danger of no-deal Brexit
