2) The problem arises if you define O2 content of blood purely as PaO2 or as PaO2+ oxyHb saturation --> for this is the total O2 content of blood.
If we eliminate oxyHb, O2 content of blood becomes less meaningful since the lion's share of O2 is carried by hemoglobin!

3) If you consider oxyHb + PaO2 in total the anemic and O2 affinity forms of hypoxia must necessarily be a cause of hypoxemic hypoxia --> since anemia (reduced Hb) or increased O2 affinity --> cause HYPOXEMIA!

As UK deaths continue to increase, I wanted to write about dying of respiratory failure. It won't be easy - either to write or read - but I think it is important, particularly for those who will tragically have their loved ones go through the process. #COVID19 #coronavirusuk
Last year, my 39-year-old husband, Sam, died of respiratory failure associated with rejection of his lung transplant, 8 years after his transplant. His increasing respiratory failure at home was terrifying for him and for me. We both felt helpless and afraid. #RespiratoryFailure
This was actually the worst part of the whole process, for Sam and for me. With COVID, for some people, this will be the last contact with your loved one that you have. I want to explain how from this point on, in a strange way it gets better, so perhaps you will be less afraid.
1/10 It’s hard to shut my mind off in the face of #COVID19. As #AcuteCareSurgeons our day/night/weekend jobs taking care of #injured patients and #patients needing #EmergencySurgery for abdominal and soft tissue diseases do not dissipate.
2/10 Yet we are also experts in #CriticalCare and need to prepare to care for patients w/ #respiratoryfailure and #shock due to #COVID19. We are implementing #plans based on the little evidence that exists while trying to stay #safe, #healthy, and #resilient.
3/10 We step into the trauma bay as others threaten to shoot our patient (but police can protect us). We do operations where rHepC/HIV risk is high (but PEP can protect us). We don't shy away from blood, feces or dead flesh up to our eyeballs (but we have #PPE to protect us).
