UK PM @BorisJohnson will soon set out an energy security strategy. The biggest, quickest action 🇬🇧 can take to wean itself off Russian gas and expensive #FossilFuels is to invest in home #EnergyEfficiency and renewables. AN ENERGY SECURITY STARTS AT HOME TOP 10 FACTS THREAD 🧵
Fact 1/ Nearly 90% of the increase in bills over the last year is due to the rising price of gas, which has more than tripled over the same period. Most of the remaining increase is the cost of suppliers going bust. ofgem.gov.uk/energy-data-an…
Fact 2/ The UK has the oldest, most poorly insulated housing stock in western Europe, and over 85% of our homes are connected to the gas grid – leaving UK families sharply exposed to the volatility of international gas markets.

What are retrofit options for someone with 90-100m² ‘hard to treat’ home, concerned about rising gas prices and the planet? Installing a heat pump is single largest measure for lowering the carbon footprint, but how soon to fit one on retrofit journey? #retrofit #heatpumps 1/
Doing nothing on fabric or gas means bills will escalate
and there is a serious risk that such a home will have lower resale value in the future. By starting to think about retrofit, home owners might do things they have put off for years, like clearing the loft. /2
Getting off gas early prioritises planet, without bills needing to rise.
Install ASHP early alongside
Limited fabric measures, such as loft insulation to modern std; seals / brushes for doors / sash windows for drafts (and cavity wall insulation added if applicable) 3/

This is not to say all we need to do is electrify transport and build renewables, we should also be looking to radically reduce car ownership and miles driven, and to radically increase miles by 🚲 🛴 🚶‍♂️🚃 🚊 and 🚌.
Nails arriving tomorrow so time for a bit of cleaning before putting the floorboards down. Not much use in having the low-dust house (airtight and filtered fresh air through the MVHR) if there’s a load of dust right under the floorboards! #Passivhaus #EnerPHit ImageImage
Making some more holes so I can measure exact distance between studs so @Drew_Carr_ can finalise the downstairs window sizes.

What on earth is building paper anyway? Just waxy paper? Does anyone still use it? Image

the proxy design pattern is a super useful one in @Java.
The idea behind a proxy is to make it more transparent to work with remote resources. They're all over the place in @Java and enterprise Java, in particular. I'm going to look at some of my favorite examples in this thread
Spring Integration supports messaging gateways through proxies: inject a reference to Cafe, invoke that method and a Message<T> with the payload Order gets sent on the orders MessageChannel (and then to anywhere ya like)

(1/4) There has been a lot of chat this week about the cost of #retrofit #heatpump installs. Here's an installer's view on the three types of costs that drive it - 1. Costs that won't change 2. Costs that intervention could change 3. Costs that will change as the market grows.
(2/4) The first time you retrofit a #heatpump it will always be more expensive than a new gas boiler. You have to put in a new hot water tank, run pipework outside, build a base for the heat pump, ensure radiators and pipework are adequate. These costs vary from house to house.
(3/4) There are also costs that government action could reduce: streamline the process to connect to the electricity grid; invest in training installers; mandate low temp boiler installs; make the planning conditions more sensible (1m from property boundary, why 😡?)

Recently, I was asked to give a seminar for @mhclg’s planners on the challenges faced by local authority planners delivering against the #climateemergency, because I work with lots of councils & I’m also Cabinet Member for Forward Planning at @CotswoldDC. So I know some stuff.
First up, I did the ‘we’re all doomed’ bit. You know, the rollercoaster graphs steeply going up and the even steeper graphs of how emissions need to come down.
Then I mentioned about how most plans are running for about another 10-15 years and they need re-writing immediately because most of them pay diddly-squat attention to the ‘what goes up must come down graphs’ from the ‘we’re all doomed’ bit.

So overt questions of regulating energy in capitalism are legit terrain for a partisan empirics of energy research. But are we aware how much we enjoy our own more private ideologies? Reactions to @UKLabour energy policy are fascinating.

#NetZero target is incredibly welcome to focus minds so, from our work on over 3 million homes so far, here is what we have learned so far about the Home Front in the #climateemergency THREAD 👇
1. Carrots and sticks: Legal targets cut through ROI & get #retrofit to top of agenda. The #CleanGrowthStrategy targets are already driving investment amongst our public and private sector clients and action will accelerate once the standards, and their enforcement, are clarified
2. Sell the sofa not the finance: Of the carrots, our research amongst home-owners shows there is appetite for good-value #retrofit finance to overcome upfront costs, but the rest of the offer has to appeal first. Again, multiple levers are needed.
