Finishing up my backlog, this being the first, as we don't typically put focus on what happens to domesticated plants as much as we do with animals, and I thought I'd change that.

For Avocados and Gourds, with their large seeds and large and tough shells, it's essentially pleistocene rewilding, as now they have megafauna again to spread disperse their seeds (and of course, descendants of animals who have recognized pumpkins as a treat).
For the dragonfruit, it's essentially inspired by how much elephants took a liking to invasive Prickly pear fruit, and dragonfruit is VERY popular in shoutheast asia (including my own home, Indonesia).

Smaller fruits, from plums to apples to peaches, also have more dispersers.

Third post in the #WildlifeWeek series.

Day 3 - #Rhino resurgence in the #Terai !!

The Greater One-Horned #Rhinoceros is the second largest #mammal in #India after the #Elephant. Its distribution once ranged from the flood plains of the Indus to the Indo-Burmese border.
1/11 Image
However the loss of #grassland #habitat resulted in only a small population remaining in North East India and #Nepal. The species was totally extirpated from the Indian Terai in the 19th century, with the last rhino there being shot in the #Pilibhit Forest Division in 1878.
2/11
Following this extirpation, #Dudhwa National Park was surveyed for its habitat suitability for the species and finally in 1984, the Addl. CWLW U.P was tasked to capture 6 rhinos from the #Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, #Assam by tranquilizing them.

What is the connection between the African #WildlifeEconomy, legal #hunting & trophy trade, and #rhino #conservation? Here are some insights from my work as detailed in recent articles for @ConLetters @Society4ConBio @TC_Africa @africa_resource @OppGenRC & @WildlifeEconomy

🧵
First, consider the context: African conservation’s colonial legacy, a fast-growing human population, growing economic pressure to exploit wildlands, and the recent loss of critical revenue flows to wildlife custodians caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. See
ogresearchconservation.org/african-wildli…
One source of these revenue flows is legal wildlife hunting tourism. Hunting wildlife for meat is common, but international tourists pay the most to hunt large charismatic species (e.g., the ‘Big 5’) and usually (but not always) like to take mounted specimens home as trophies.

Taronga’s #science team collaborates on programs that assess and maximise #GeneticDiversity in zoo-based, wild populations, & CryoDiversity Banks (frozen repositories), to promote population resilience & the capacity of species to adapt to change. #RRAP Image
#GeneticDiversity within #wildlife populations relates to long-term survival. Genes affect many things, including body size, #disease, tolerance of temperature extremes, all of which can be important for #CoralReef systems. #Coral #RRAP
Every animal - #frog, #coral or #rhino - is subtly unique and diversity is key for populations to thrive and be healthy. When populations become small and inbred, or ecosystems suffer too much #biodiversityloss, ecosystems collapse. #RRAP

Yesterday a one horn Rhino was poached in Kaziranga, horn was chopped off. Also empty cartridges of AK47 assault rifle were found.

It’s only April and Melissa Singleton has nearly finished the 1,245km @ForRangers Ol Pejeta #VirtualUltra. With the support of her husband Brad and daughter Zahra, Melissa has maintained a dedicated routine that has left her with just 65kms to go.
A few years ago, she visited Ol Pejeta and met Sudan, which played a huge part in her desire to participate in the #marathon and do what she could to raise money for #rhino conservation.
The race isn’t quite over yet - she still needs to raise a bit more to reach the necessary US$1,000. Help her help rhinos by donating on her page here donate.olpejetaconservancy.org/fundraisers/me…. Melissa, we are very grateful for your efforts.
