Latvia's government has extended the state of emergency due to the pandemic until January 11 and imposed a night curfew over the turn of the year.

The cabinet in Riga decided on Wednesday to extend the state of emergency in the Baltic EU country until February 6th. This means that public life and economic activities in Latvia remain restricted.

Latvia's government wants to extend the state of emergency declared until January 11 and impose night curfews over the turn of the year.

The cabinet in Riga agreed in a meeting with the Corona crisis team to extend the state of emergency until February 6. Citizens should also not be allowed to leave their homes between December 30 and January 4 and January 8 and 9 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Latvia has eased corona-related entry restrictions. The quarantine obligation only applies to those arriving from countries with more than 25 corona cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the past two weeks.

So far, the limit for entry into the Baltic EU country was 16 cases. Anyone entering Latvia from other countries with a rate of more than 25 cases must continue to be quarantined for ten days. There is also an obligation to register on arrival in the Baltic state.

According to the list published by the health authority in Riga, there are only four other countries besides Latvia itself below the 25 mark: #Finland, #Cyprus, #Liechtenstein and the #Vatican. The list shows almost exclusively European countries.

Latvia will send newcomers and returnees from risk areas to quarantine for only 10 instead of 14 days. The government in Riga accepted a corresponding proposal from the Ministry of Health at a cabinet meeting.
