While @RishiSunak’s proposals to refer people who “vilify Britain” to PREVENT are horrifying, they are not surprising.

Let’s explore some of the troubling aspects of the proposals.

A 🧵…

(Prepare for a long one)

1/
2/ @RishiSunak wants to expand the definition of extremism to include those with an “extreme hatred of Britain”. However…
3/ the definition of extremism is already exceptionally broad and has been repeatedly criticised for being too wide, confusing, and subjective.

Tory MPs: 1)#traindrivers are not on strike; 2)the voters created their own #TacticalVoting scheme + executed it because they wanted to spell out just how much they want anything but #ToryLiars; 3) we like our #HumanRights...leave them alone; 4) loyalty to a liar will end careers
5) smashing things up/ defunding, then claim to be fixing stuff is not a sustainable strategy and we see what you're doing.#SaveOurNHS
6) your Twitter bubble may love hideous policies like #RwandaDeportation..the country as a whole does not;7)#foodbanks are not a photo opp but a
source of shame; 8) we aren't stupid...unlike your front bench; 9) we know where levelling up money goes and why...10) not mentioning #Brexit doesn't make it less of a sh*tshow.

It's not "racist" or "condescending" to point out that shipping vulnerable people more than 4,000 miles away to a country with a record of human rights abuses is absolutely inhumane. Everyone should be using #CHOGM2022 to condemn the UK government's deportation plan. 1/ #r4today
We're not talking about "sending people home", as has been claimed by a number of people, when highlighting how forcibly transporting asylum seekers to a country where they don't speak the language, know anyone, and face serious risks of trafficking is fundamentally wrong. 2/
You can't even claim "UNHCR says it is okay" when UNHCR has had to go to court and say the government is lying to refugees about its involvement. UNHCR uses Rwanda as a TEMPORARY transit point. The UK is talking about forcing them to live there for the rest of their lives. 3/

Home Office (HO) has decided to put GPS tags on refugees who were set for #RwandaDeportation and also on those arriving on boats. Here is my interview in @Independent very clearly highlighting as to why electronic tagging must not be used: independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…
A thread (1/10)
(2/10) Tagging is highly intrusive & experienced as punishment. And it is indeed a punishment in the criminal justice context. On top, HO is going to combine it with 'curfew orders' and 'exclusion zones'. So people will be confined and will not be able to enter/leave a location.
(3/10) Also, HO is not clear as to for how long people will remain on tag. Failure to comply with tag+restrictions is a criminal offence! In 2016, The Court of Appeal said HO had no power to impose a curfew under EM powers or general powers under Immigration Act 1971

Tonight’s ECtHR intervention is a measure granted only exceptionally where there’s a “real risk of irreversible harm”.

That no removal should take place until 3 weeks after the final domestic decision is the common sense this govt so often mentions in the human rights context.
On a day when the UK Prime Minister’s attacks on lawyers have led the leaders of the profession to issue a strong statement, where Johnson has unleashed at least a question mark over the ECHR itself, this is a confrontation his govt has brought on itself - perhaps foreseeably.
Where culture war meets Brexit goals, this is the day after the govt claims preservation of the Good Friday Agreement forms part of a barely plausible justification for its #NIProtocol Bill.

Meanwhile, the GFA expressly preserves the ECHR, & direct enforceability, as a safeguard.

Today I've seen a number of trending hashtags with a common theme: the UK Government's increasingly obvious #Fascist tendencies.

#THREAD on what Linguist Ruth Wodak calls 'shameless normalisation', which explicitly refers to ‘impolite or shameless behaviour’ manifested in "the far-right populists’ agendas (& related rhetoric)... which have already reached the political mainstream."

They separate people up & start shipping them off to camps too satisfy the appetite of the racists they have encouraged to hate for their political ends. This is what fascism does. Points a finger at the weakest “it’s all their fault.” #RwandaDeportation
From the Breaking Point Poster to the deportation to Rwanda of people who’s legal right to claim Asylum is being Denied by this far right government - you can trace a clear line. A clear direction of travel. Who will they tell us to hate next? You? Me?
They came for the Junior Doctors, the nurses, the teachers, (the victims of Windrush will tell you this is nothing new). Ask those who have spent 5 years campaigning for justice for Grenfell. You are most valuable to the government as hate figures. As those to be “othered”.
