Japan's Hayabusa2, which had been flying in space for nearly six years to tag and collect a sample from the asteroid Ryugu, dropped a small capsule containing fragments of space rock here on Earth for study.
Last week, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) opened the capsule and for the first time exposed the precious space cargo to the world. And a surprise was in store. The photos are the climax of the mission Hayabusa2, which ended a five-year journey on February 21, 2019,
when it landed on asteroid Ryugu. In June, 2018, the spacecraft arrived within the Ryugu range and spent more than a year circling its rocky companion, gathering Ryugu observations and photos until its final touchdown.

There will be a #Hayabusa2 post-touchdown press conference at 2:00 UTC today (tonight), streaming at - I reckon it'll be in Japanese only. (And 15 minutes after the #Falcon9 lift-off if that happens on time - space action around the clock ... :-)
Nothing noteworthy noted while @haya2e_jaxa was at "gate 5", so it's returning to its standard parking position in 20 km distance from #Ryugu now - the webcast is over, and it's unlikely we'll learn more before the press conference in 1 1/2 hours.
Looks like at we will get the #Hayabusa2 post-touchdown press conference at the top of the hour with an *English* translation. (While at the @SpaceX webcast should still be running - just not enough time for so much space ... ;-)
