One of my favorite #Safaific texts in the square script. It is by Hamlat son of Sālem, who calls himself ‘the bandit’ ‘al-laṣṭ, ultimately from Greek ληστής. He set off on a journey (‘ayera) with his kinsman (rāheṭ-oh) ‘mrn, plausibly ‘emrān, of the lineage of ga’barat...
He was then mindful (dhakara) his kinsmen (‘arheṭat-oh) and invokes the goddess Allāt for security (salām) and protection from misfortune/evil (qeyat meb-bo’s). The text is now at the Mafraq Antiquities Office where I took this photo.
The text is undated but similar texts date around 2k years old, and probably not later than the 3rd c. CE. If the name ‘mrn is equivalent to Quranic عمران then it shows that the name predated the spread of monotheism and is probably another example of a pre-existing Arabic name..
