23 मई, 1984 भारत के लिए गर्व का दिन था। इस दिन बछेंद्री पाल 8,848 मीटर ऊंचे माउंट एवरेस्ट की चोटी पर तिरंगा फहराने वाली पहली भारतीय महिला बनी थीं।

हरियाणा के रेवाड़ी जिले में जन्मीं संतोष यादव का जीवन संघर्ष भरा था। वह बताती हैं, "मैं अपने स्कूल के लिए घर से 5 किलोमीटर पैदल चलकर जाती थी। स्कूल में पक्की फ़र्श नहीं थी, न ही बैठने के लिए सीटें या गद्दे लगे थे, इसलिए हम बोरे लेकर जाते थे।
रास्ते में अगर कभी बारिश होती थी, तो अपने बस्ते से ही खुद को भीगने से बचाते!”
उन्हें पढ़ाई का बहुत शौक़ था, लेकिन परिवार की मानसिकता इससे अलग थी। किसी तरह पिता को मनाकर, संतोष जयपुर के महारानी कॉलेज में पढ़ने चली गईं। वहां उनके हॉस्टल से अरावली की पहाड़ियाँ दिखती थीं।
उन्हें पढ़ाई का बहुत शौक़ था, लेकिन परिवार की मानसिकता इससे अलग थी। किसी तरह पिता को मनाकर, संतोष जयपुर के महारानी कॉलेज में पढ़ने चली गईं। वहां उनके हॉस्टल से अरावली की पहाड़ियाँ दिखती थीं।
