I’m so proud we delivered for the arts in New York and across the country with #SaveOurStages and the #AmericanRescuePlan.

Here’s how you can help us bring back the arts in New York and across America ➡
✅ Tweet at local venues to apply for the $16B available from @SBAgov
✅ Let freelancing artist friends struggling to find work know they're eligible for enhanced unemployment
✅ Share that many arts workers are eligible for expanded Child Tax Credit & Earned Income Tax Credit
✅ Follow local and national organizations working for the future of live entertainment and the arts
✅ Thank the arts unions and all the other folks who make live entertainment and the arts possible

I spent one year of primary education in a public school: kindergarten. My parents were/are far right wing culture warriors, coming through the JPUSA movement in the ‘70s and into the Calvary Chapel movement in the ‘80s as they got cozy with power during the Reagan administration
The homeschool movement was fringe right wing, intending to bring up a whole generation of people groomed in the culture war, prepared to overturn the liberal institutions.
The fringe right wing of American politics was/is the mainstream of white evangelicalism. My father operated mainstream Christian radio stations - I would know.

Alright folks, as 2020 comes to a close, I figured I'd remind you that you can still watch some spectacular and poignant stage performances online. It's been tough for many of us not to be able to escape to a theatre for a musical or a play or a concert the last 9 months. 1/
The arts community has suffered greatly and at least in the US, performers have not received much - if anything - in the way of financial relief. Yet the arts are INTEGRAL to our lives. So I'm sharing a few links so you can enjoy a few productions online this week and donate. 2/
Filmed at St Paul's Church in @CoventGardenLDN, the @DonmarWarehouse has made its mixed-media Christmas concert (featuring several West End performers!) available on YouTube:

Thank you @JerryMoran @SenatorWicker for your opening statements. Especially good to hear @SenatorWicker say we are concerned about the "average men and women" of the industry. The workers need relief.

I WON'T SHOUT AGAAIN, but consider everything that follows to be in an emphatic tone bordering on anger: Do you know how much the UK government provided in arts and culture grants today? £257 million. That's $331 million here.
How much special funding for the live performing arts has the U.S. government provided in this time of crisis, considering that the population of the US is five times that of the UK? $75 million, less than 25% of UK support.
40% of the US funds went to state arts councils. The other funds yielded 846 grants of $50K each to arts organizations. Since those grants? Zero. Zed. Nil. Nada. Nothing. Yet the challenges are the same between US and UK, and pandemic wears on. Angry yet?

“Ek’s saying that musicians need to look at themselves less as artists and more as content creators. We have no muse to serve but the marketplace, and without adhering to the rapid 💓 rate that is Spotify’s demand for new food for their algorithm, our careers are bound to perish”
Let’s flip Spotify’s words:

“some streaming services that used to do well in the past may not do well in this future landscape, where you can't a (re)launch new groundbreaking music platform once every three to four years and think that’s going to be enough.” @eldsjal
"The streaming services today that are making it, realise that it's about creating a continuous engagement with their fans.

It is about putting the work in, about the storytelling around the service, and about keeping a continuous dialogue with your fans"

👀 @Spotify 🤷‍♂️

Even performers who make money on their art in normal times... We're struggling.

Our industry is dead/dying. A lot of people have been unemployed for 4+ months with no end in sight.

It's hard to create right now. And even livestreaming A TON - it's not a replacement for IRL.
(And I'm honestly in a fairly good mental place. But with the backdrop of the pandemic, police brutality, growing fascism... It's not a great headspace to create.

Trust me, we're all also beating ourselves up about it too. But this is not an extended vacation or artist retreat.)
Since this is getting a little traction: Ask your congresspeople to support #SaveOurStages.

Artists need venues to make magic happen for you. And you probably want to see a concert or a play sometime in the future. Stages are special places & need help.
