Don't look now @RishiSunak & @trussliz - some more truths just in:

The #RightsRemovalBill will let the Government decide who does and doesn't get rights and will take rights away from migrants.

But the public says... 77% say everyone in the UK ...
@RishiSunak @trussliz The Human Rights Act forces public authorities - like Gov and police - to respect your rights.

This duty forced the second inquest into the Hillsborough disaster that finally got to the truth.

The #RightsRemovalBill will let public bodies ignore your rights.

The public says... 77% say public authorities ...
The Human Rights Act empowers you to challenge abuse of your rights in British courts.

The #RightsRemovalBill makes it much harder to get your case off the ground, hiding those in power from accountability for their actions.

The public says... 76% say people must be able...

We have the #RightsRemovalBill. It’s worse than I feared. Here are top lines from first read:
S(1) repeals obligation on courts to read legislation in a way that is compatible with human rights & attempts to take away judicial role in deciding balance of rights
S3 rejects the European Court of Human Rights’ authority as final arbiter of human rights & requires that UK courts do not adopt definitions of rights that go broader than the European Court
S4 protects free speech giving it “great weight” in some circs but removing the ability to rely on free speech when arguing a criminal offence breaches human rights (eg a protest offence), when challenging deportation or when dealing with national security issue

This #RightsRemovalBill is as bad as we feared. It is a power grab from a Government who want to avoid scrutiny for cruel and racist policies 🧵
This must be seen alongside the Borders Bill, Policing Bill and Elections Bill.

Combined, ethnic minority people in the UK are facing the most significant threat to their civil rights in recent memory. ft.com/content/a63e82…
This #RightsRemovalBill would limit our ability to challenge things like Voter ID, revoking citizenship for those with ties elsewhere, or deporting refugees to Rwanda against the public will.

BREAKING: The moment we feared is here. Tonight the Government has announced scrapping the Human Rights Act & introducing a Bill of Rights. Here's what you need to know about this regressive & scary step...🧵
1. Enshrines the toxic idea of rights being conditional on good behaviour. Rights become gifts the state can take away if it deems you to be troublesome. This means impunity for rights abuses, particularly against people in prison, police custody, protestors
2. Strips family life rights for migrants (Article 8). People who commit a crime will be deported unless it would cause their child/dependent "overwhelming, unavoidable harm". You could grow up here, have your whole family here, a life here, & still be put on a plane...

MPs from across Parliament and 150 organisations demand full scrutiny of the Government's planned bill that will rip up our #HumanRightsAct

Gov's refusing.

What are they so afraid of?*

*rhetorical question. We know it's any form of accountability.
The Government's plan to rip up our #HumanRightsAct is a power grab.

More power for them. Fewer rights for you.

BREAKING

On the day the Government's #HumanRightsAct consultation closes, new polling shows the public reject Gov's agenda of attempting to make itself untouchable. A graphic showing new polling carried out by Liberty on top A graphic displaying text on top of an image of the Prime Mi
The Government wants to rip up our #HumanRightsAct.

The only people who benefit from weakening rights are those in power - and that's a Gov that's also:

🔘making it harder to challenge it in court
🔘criminalising protest
🔘stopping people voting
🔘dodging scrutiny from MPs
Gov's agenda: stop people challenging it and rewrite the rules to make itself untouchable.

But new polling from @nfp_Research shows:

81% of people say governments must not make themselves unaccountable

80% say people should be able to stand up to power and challenge injustice

The Government's consultation on its proposed 'overhaul' of our #HumanRightsAct closes tomorrow.

This isn’t a plan to improve the system.

It’s an attempt to weaken everyone's human rights and hide from accountability for their actions.

THE HUMAN RIGHTS ACT

In a functioning democracy, people must be able to hold the powerful to account.

The #HumanRightsAct enables everyone in the UK to do just that and stand up for our rights when public authorities – like Gov + local councils – fall short.
The #HumanRightsAct protects us from misuse of power no matter who we are.

And it's helped bring a culture of respecting human rights into hospitals, schools, care homes, and housing associations – changing the way thousands of people are treated and supported.

Today the Government announced proposals to limit people's ability to challenge Gov and public bodies in court.

NO ONE SHOULD BE ABOVE THE LAW

But the Government is trying to hide from accountability at every turn.

SIDELINING PARLIAMENT

Gov has spent the last year drastically changing everyone's lives with barely a moment's notice - and next to no scrutiny from elected MPs.

Table of all COVID regs here from @AdamWagner1 -many enacted the same day MPs first saw them
PROTEST

The #PoliceCrackdown Bill gives police more powers to shut down protest, creates a buffer zone around Parliament, makes 'serious annoyance' punishable by 10 years in prison AND MORE.

Protest isn't a gift from the State. It's our fundamental right

We all want to live in an equal, just and fair society

Our laws and legal processes allow ordinary ppl to hold govs and public authorities to account when they get it wrong

Recommendations announced today show these basic principles of democracy are under attack
#SaveYourRights
By suggesting it shouldn’t be poss to bring legal challenges against certain decisions, and limiting court powers when they find Gov has acted unlawfully, Gov is stifling ppl’s ability to challenge its decisions through the courts, even decisions that infringe basic human rights
Ordinary ppl must be able to challenge those in power.

No one is above the law.

#JudicialReview is importantr part of that principle.

If it’s limited, we’re on a dangerous path where govs – both now and in future – can no longer be held to account
