Gavin Newsom this week signed or vetoed a big flurry of bills having to do with criminal justice & prison. You may have seen some headlines (solitary reform vetoed; free phone calls), but it's hard to keep track.

So here's a thread on 13 of the biggest, & why they matter. ⬇
1️⃣ Gavin Newsom SIGNED a bill to make phone calls free from prison.

"High cost of prison phone calls has sapped money from low-income families with incarcerated loved ones.... [many] go in debt in their attempt to maintain contact with loved ones" #SB1008

2️⃣ Newsom SIGNED a bill to expand California's 'compassionate release' program, which will help people leave prison when terminally ill.

With very long sentencing, so many people are condemned to die in prison. This is chip into that. #AB960 boltsmag.org/california-leg…

Huge news in California: Newsom signed #SB1008, a bill that will make phone calls from prison free for incarcerated people.

Here's more context: smdailyjournal.com/news/local/new…
I'm not seeing the bill signing on Newsom's press releases & legislative website yet, but the news was tweeted by Senator @JoshBeckerSV, who sponsored the legislation.
There are still many criminal justice bills on Newsom's desk, so the next few days will be very interesting.

This one for instance: boltsmag.org/california-leg…

We use a justice center model. That means we have 5 distinct projects that provide legal services and we house them under one roof to share support, administrative and communications services.

New! Joint project w/ @theappeal exploring lives of the "Left Behind," ppl serving life for crimes committed while children. Last yr's youth sentencing reforms in Oregon don't address their cases - unfinished business. bit.ly/32KS2AZ #leftbehindoregon #jlwop #cjreform
@theappeal There are more than 100 juvenile lifers in our state prisons. Some are serving "true life" sentences which mean they may never be released. Others do have the possibility of release dates but they may not come until they are well into old age. #jlwop #cjreform #orpol
It's difficult to persuade legislators to unpick decisions already made about past cases, and there are some legal barriers to doing so. The new law #SB1008 does not address the extremely lengthy sentences some Oregonians are already serving. #orpol #leftbehindoregon

A House Judiciary Comm hearing about #SB1008 on youth sentencing reform is just beginning. We'll be tweeting throughout the hearing. #orpol
What does #SB1008 do? 1. Allows judges to decide whether youth “aging out” of OYA custody at 25 who will complete their sentence by their 27th birthday should serve the rest of their sentence under community supervision rather than in adult prison. #orpol
2. Ends life without parole sentences for youth with a meaningful opportunity for release after 15 years. #orpol #jlwop
